The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, has condemned the protest, which greeted the removal of Mr. Eyitayo Jegede’s name as the candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state.
There was a state-wide protest on Friday over the declaration of Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate of the PDP by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Thursday.
Akeredolu, in a statement issued by the chairman, Akeredolu Campaign Platform, Mr. Kunle Adebayo, on Friday, expressed concern over the tension and anxiety generated in the state on Friday by the final list of governorship candidates published by the INEC.
He said it was regrettable that the PDP government threatened to cause a crisis if its preferred candidate was not recognised by the INEC in the released final list.
The statement read, “While we recognise the fact that the choice of candidates remains an internal matter of the PDP, we are also disappointed and outraged that the public, particularly the electorate and innocent citizens are now being subjected to unwarranted threats and embarrassment by the PDP due to its inability to govern its affairs decently.”
In the same vein, the PDP governorship candidate, Ibrahim, has accused Governor Segun Mimiko of sponsoring thugs to burn tyres on roads to protest against his [Ibrahim] emergence as the governorship candidate.
In a statement on Friday, Ibrahim said, “My attention has been drawn to the ongoing burning of tyres under the pretence of disruption of activities orchestrated by Governor Segun Mimiko.
