The High Court sitting in Gombe, the Gombe State capital, has sentenced a man, Muhammad Adamu, who falsely presented himself as an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in the state, to 14 years in prison.
The spokesman for the commission’s zonal office in Gombe, Mr. Gbenga Aroyehun, said this in an email to SUNDAY PUNCH.
He stated that the EFCC had charged Adamu for impersonation when he went to the Executive Secretary of the Gombe Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Board and claimed to be an employee of the EFCC in order to extort money and other benefits from the board.
According to Aroyehun, the secretary of the pilgrims board wrote a petition to the commission alleging that the convict presented a list of false officials of the Gombe zonal office of the EFCC and that he demanded unspecified amounts of money to induce the EFCC officials.
The anti-graft agency’s spokesman stated that other charges brought against the convict were attempt to commit an offence and being in possession of forged documents.
“The judge also ordered that the convict pay a restitution of N45,000 to one Musa Haruna, being the sum the convict falsely collected from him and a fine of N50,000,” he said.
