I was one of the few Nigerians who believed so much in 2014 that if Muhammadu Buhari does not emerge as Nigeria’s President in 2015, the country would have lost a messiah forever. I was passionately hopeful, campaigned vigorously for the man, both online and offline, made some few enemies; believed so much that Nigeria under Buhari would be rid of insecurity, especially from Boko Haram, corruption, and the goodies of democracy would be distributed among every Nigerians.
My passion for the Muhammadu Buhari presidency was based on the man’s antecedents that I had read, and those I was told from stories from the 80s while growing up. They said he was a no-nonsense man, he detests corruption with a passion, he is an angel in human skin…blablabla. I even wrote articles about him, defended certain of his actions online at the onset of this administration; that was how much i loved a Muhammadu Buhari Presidency.
Many of us in this category then bought the story, took everything hook, line and sinker; went into the polls with the notion that Nigeria is about to vote in an angel in human skin. But We were wrong.
President Muhammadu Buhari has been complete opposite of what many of us thought. To say I personally, was not disappointed about what is currently happening in the country today, would be nothing short of a self-deception. Initially, I told myself I was not going to criticise his administration until after two years; a promise I didn’t keep after discovering the Buhari administration was headed in the wrong direction in certain areas.
Yesterday, Hauwa Liman was murdered by ISWAP, a faction of Boko Haram because of the neglect and failure of the Nigerian state to act appropriately under President Buhari. ISWAP is Islamic State West Africa Province, a faction of the dreaded Boko Haram terrorist. She and others were kidnapped since March of this year, and had remained in ISWAP custody until her gruesome murder yesterday. In September 2018, the insurgent group killed Saifura Ahmed, also an humanitarian worker.
These happenings have proven beyond reasonable doubt that Buhari cannot be trusted with a second term in office come 2019. He has failed to deliver on his promises. Nigerians are tired of promises, what we want is real progress and an end to repeated murder of innocent citizens by Boko Haram.
