Vice President Kamala Harris has officially accepted CNN’s invitation for a presidential debate against former President Donald Trump on October 23, signaling another high-stakes face-off just weeks before the 2024 election. Harris’ campaign chair, Jen O’Malley Dillon, expressed confidence in the vice president, stating she is ready to stand on the same stage with Trump once again.
In a tweet, Harris confirmed her willingness to engage, saying she “will gladly accept a second presidential debate” and hopes Trump will join her on October 23. Harris’ move highlights her commitment to presenting her ideas to the American public and addressing the critical issues facing the nation.
Trump, however, has shown reluctance toward a second debate, arguing that it may be too late as early voting for the 2024 election has already begun. Speaking at a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, Trump remarked, “The problem with another debate is that it’s just too late, voting has already started.” Previously, on Truth Social, Trump stated, “THERE WILL BE NO THIRD DEBATE!” However, he later suggested he might reconsider if he was “in the right mood.”
Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, referred CNN to Trump’s Truth Social post when asked if the former president would accept the debate invitation. Despite the uncertainty from Trump’s side, Harris remains firm in her stance, calling for transparency and public engagement. “I believe we owe it to the voters,” Harris said, emphasizing the importance of another debate to allow the American public to make informed decisions.
The proposed debate is scheduled to be held at CNN’s studios in Atlanta, mirroring the format of the first 2024 presidential debate that occurred in June between Trump and President Joe Biden. That initial debate was a pivotal moment in the campaign. Following a poor performance, Biden eventually bowed out of the race, endorsing Harris as the Democratic nominee.
CNN believes that the American public would benefit from hearing more from both candidates as they make their final decisions for the 2024 presidential election. The network stated, “We look forward to receiving a response from both campaigns so the American public can hear more from these candidates.”
As the election approaches, this debate could serve as a decisive moment in shaping the future of the race, with Harris eager to make her case for leadership and challenge Trump on critical issues in real-time.
