It is no longer a secret that Nigeria’s Democracy is not for the people, by the people and for the people. It is only for the selfish interests of the politicians and their cronies. We have witnessed during the Ekiti, Edo, Ondo and the just concluded Osun state gubernatorial elections that, democracy, as currently practiced in Nigeria; goes in favour of the highest bidder. As a matter of fact, in the just concluded Peoples Democratic Party Presidential convention, delegates went home with as much as $9,000 dollars (as widely reported by Nigeria’s news media), with Atiku Abubakar dolling up as much as $5,000 to emerge the eventual flag-bearer.
$5,000 dollars, that is whopping N1,815,000 if you multiply it by N363 Nigerian Naira. Just imagine for a second, that each delegates went home with $9,000 dollars as widely reported, that tells you a delegate would be worth N3,267,000 as at the time of writing this short piece; assuming he or she hasn’t touched the money since the exercise was concluded, just by participating in a presidential primary that lasted barely 72hours. This is why it has become, if not almost difficult, for the true wishes of the Nigerian people to prevail during elections in Nigeria.
Politicians now have resorted into buying their way into occupying political offices. This is a practice that is becoming almost impossible to stop. I know some of you would argue that the delegates system had always been this way, and that candidates are sure aware that they have to appease the gods of the delegates (the god of money they worship) if they would ever emerge. And so, we no longer cherish intellectualism, debates, achievable programs through effective policies direction, as the norm for giving candidates our support anymore, everything now is about the highest spender.
There are enough candidates, with proven academic track records, successes in their private businesses and enterprises, who knows where Nigeria’s numerous problems lies, and who have the solution at the tips of their fingers to transform Nigeria. Donald Trump was a successful business man, a Real Estate Mogul and one with an extensive achievement in the private sector. Today, he is the President of the United States of America. It is a myth to assume that Nigeria can only make progress in the hands of those who have impoverished and contributed to her downfall in the past.
It is wrong to assume that if it is not Muhammadu Buhari or Atiku Abubakar, then no other person can make Nigeria record the necessary progress. Muhammadu Buhari for instance is almost rounding off his first tenure, what progress can Nigerians point at that was made? Forget about the pockets of projects that his administration is working on here and there, the economy is what unites every Nigerians; whether rich or poor. How many Nigerians can really say Buhari has done well economic-wise?
With a number of policy summersaults, most Nigerians became poorer under this administration. Basic goods and commodities went up astronomically high, and we are even faced with another threat of a fresh recession. Why should anyone on earth thinks Buhari deserve a second term as Nigeria’s President? But his corrupt APC gave him a return ticket, unopposed; meaning that, Buhari is the best thing that can happen to all of APC. That is a shame really!
Nigerians must say no to these old wine skin of politicians in 2019. We must put the nation first, above their naira and dollars. These are the same moneybags, the old generation of politicians who have milked Nigeria dry. There is no salvation in either APC or PDP for Nigerians. Many of us thought Buhari was the Messiah in 2015, but I think we all can see now that he is a deceiver, who only talks but do less. He promised he belong to every Nigerians in 2015, but now it is clear that he only belongs to APC and his own clan.
The truth is, this forthcoming 2019 elections presents Nigeria with a lot of credible alternatives than these ones flying their corrupt flags everywhere. Nigerians must look beyond PDP and APC, we should not be deceived by their fake antecedents. Let us for once look away from these political moneybags, who always think they can get away because they have their stolen cash to work the magic. It is high time we liberated ourselves from these political slavery. Don’t be fooled by your delegates, who have collected cash and have come to impose upon you once more these politicians.
Vote your conscience, say a capital No to their monies, as they will begin to come to your wards and constituencies to lure you with their corrupt money. Say no to the political Moneybags in 2019!
I rest my case.
