Pastor Azemhe Azena, a former Labour Party Chieftain, has defected to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in pursuit of his gubernatorial aspirations in Edo State. Azemhe was among the 31 governorship aspirants on the platform of the Labour Party but decided to leave the party due to alleged ill-treatment of him and his supporters by the Akoko-Edo Local Government chairman. In his resignation letter dated January 27, Azemhe cited the ill-treatment as the reason for his departure.
In joining the NNPP, Azemhe expressed his commitment to principles of good governance, transparency, and grassroots development. He stated that he would bring leadership and community engagement experience to the party, with a particular focus on addressing critical issues such as food security.
Azemhe also promised to bring positive change to Edo State and called on the people of the state to join hands with the NNPP to build an economically viable state.
Azemhe’s defection to the NNPP is significant because it adds another candidate to the growing list of gubernatorial aspirants for the September 21, 2024 election in Edo State.
The NNPP will now have to navigate a competitive field of candidates as it aims to establish itself as a viable political party in the state. It remains to be seen how Azemhe’s defection will affect the dynamics of the upcoming election and whether it will strengthen the NNPP’s chances of success.
