Access Holding Plc has confirmed the death of its Chief Executive Officer, Herbert Wigwe, along with his wife and son, in a helicopter accident in the United States.
The news was announced by Sunday Ekwochi, the company secretary.
Wigwe, who was 58 years old, had been a driving force with a “larger-than-life” personality. He had played a key role in the transformation of Access Bank Plc since joining in 2002.
The bank described his passing as a “major loss” and extended its sympathies to his family and loved ones. The board will soon announce the appointment of an Acting Group Chief Executive Officer. Wigwe was from Rivers State, Nigeria, and was born on August 15, 1966.
This tragic incident marks the loss of a prominent figure in the banking sector in Nigeria. Access Bank is one of the leading banks in the country, with a strong presence in retail and corporate banking.
Under Wigwe’s leadership, the bank has achieved substantial growth and operational excellence. In 2019, Access Bank completed its merger with Diamond Bank, creating the largest retail bank in Africa by customer base.
Wigwe had been instrumental in driving this merger and consolidating Access Bank’s position in the market. His death leaves a void in the leadership of the bank, but the board is confident in building on Wigwe’s legacy and continuing the bank’s growth.
