Twenty-five-year-old physically challenged lady, Akanni Oluwatoyin, tells TEMITOPE ADETUNJI how her disability prevented her from pursuing a career in Journalism

What was growing up like for you and where are you from?

My name is Akanni Oluwatoyin, I am 25 years old and I’m from Ede in Osun State. I currently live in Ibadan.

Growing up as an amputee was challenging for me. I faced a lot of painful experiences and obstacles. Also, I occasionally struggled to fit in and always felt different from my peers. Nevertheless, despite the difficulties, being an amputee as a child taught me to have strength and tenacity, and made me value my individuality. It made it possible for me to grow a deep sense of compassion and empathy for other people going through difficult times as well.

My journey as an amputee shaped me into the person I am today, and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

Can you share your disability story?

The story behind my disability is tied to a life-changing road accident. It occurred in 2022 while we were returning from a programme. It was a 16-passenger bus, and the accident resulted in the loss of my right leg. In the twinkling of an eye, my life took an unexpected turn as I lost my right leg. I now use a prosthesis.

When did you start using prostheses?

    2022

What do you do for a living?

I’m a graduate of Agricultural Economics and Extension; I am a certified writer, speaker, and Smartphone graphics designer. I am learning photography and I am also an entrepreneur. I run a small-scale business where I sell liquid soap, detergent, data, and charcoal. I am also the team lead of an organisation named the Eagle Girls Foundation.

It is a foundation whose vision is advocating inclusiveness for persons living with disabilities and empowering them to live a better, reputable, and comfortable life in society, while its mission is to attain a society where a better life is served for persons with disabilities through empowerment (leadership, financial and relationships) enlightenment, outreaches, workshops, seminar, campaigning, support, skill acquisition, sponsorship, and partnerships with relevant stakeholders. The motto of the foundation is “Soaring higher beyond disability”.

What inspired you to overcome the challenges of physical disability and pursue your passions?

What inspired me to overcome challenges related to my disability and pursue my passions despite physical limitations are my determination and my dreams.

Despite facing obstacles, I refuse to let my disability define me or limit my potential and I choose to focus on my aspirations and take steps toward achieving them. I believe in the power of resilience and perseverance, and I’m motivated by the desire to live life to the fullest and pursue my passions with determination.

    Which schools did you attend?

I attended the Glory Land group of schools for my Primary school education, Nikadem Model College for my secondary school education and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, all in Ondo state, for my tertiary education.

What was your experience during the school days?

My experiences during my undergraduate studies were not palatable because I isolated myself a lot from people. This affected me. However, towards the end of my school years, I changed and I started interacting with people. I engaged in activities that added value to me and became a better version of myself.

Could you discuss a specific obstacle you faced because of disability and how you overcame the challenge?

I can’t think of one because I am me and I choose to be myself, and I don’t give room for people to look down on me.

How has the challenge of physical disability influenced your career choice and professional aspirations?

My physical disability significantly influenced my career choices and professional aspirations. Initially, my disability deterred me from pursuing my passion for journalism, as I encountered discouragement from one of my teachers who could only envision the challenges and stress I might face in that field as a person with a disability. This stopped me from pursuing my passion for journalism.

However, my journey took a different direction during my undergraduate studies in agricultural economics and extension. It was during this time that I discovered a newfound sense of purpose and fulfillment by engaging in advocacy and volunteer work which allowed me to give back to society and make a positive impact, even as a lady with disability.

Can you describe the support network structures that has been helping you navigate life as a person living with physical disability?

The support network and resources that have been instrumental in helping me navigate life are primarily my family (my parents, my guidance, my brother, my uncles, and sisters), my pastors, and my friends. Their love, encouragement, and assistance have been invaluable.

I am truly grateful for the support network I have been blessed with, and I pray that God blesses them and grants them a long life to enjoy the fruits of their labour in supporting me.

How supportive are your parents and siblings?

My family has been my rock, providing unconditional love and support every step of the way. Their belief in me and willingness to help me overcome obstacles have been a source of strength and resilience.

What is your birth position in your family?

I am the second child of my parents.

How have you been promoting accessibility and inclusion?

I advocate for inclusion and accessibility with educative posts and content posted on my Facebook page. I engage in this advocacy with both written words and videos and also I advocate inclusion through the Eagle Girls Foundation.

How do you maintain a positive mindset and stay motivated in the face of adversity?

I believe in the power of determination, getting busy, and taking steps toward my goals. When I am faced with adversity, I remind myself of my dreams and aspirations, and I seek solutions by speaking out. Additionally, I love surrounding myself with a supportive network of friends, family, and mentors who believe in me and my abilities and it has helped me stay grounded and motivated.

Can you share memorable experiences that have shaped your journey as a person living with physical disability?

One of the memorable experiences that has shaped my life is my determination to further my education. It has helped me a lot.

What advice would you give to others living with physical disability and other challenges? How can they find the strength to pursue their dreams?

My advice to others facing similar challenges, whether physical or otherwise, is to never underestimate the power of resilience and determination. Regardless of the obstacles in your path, just know that you have the strength within you to overcome them and pursue your dreams. Believe in yourself and your abilities, set goals and pursue them, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or seek support when needed. Surround yourself with positive influences, whether it’s friends, family, or mentors who can offer encouragement and guidance along your life journey.

Remember, your dreams are worth pursuing, and with determination, perseverance, and support, you can overcome any challenge and achieve your goals.”

How do you address misconceptions or stereotypes about disability in your interactions?

The first thing is to keep on educating people about the realities of disability by sharing my personal experiences with them to challenge stereotypes, promote understanding, and encourage empathy.

Also, I keep advocating for inclusive practices and accommodations that support the needs of individuals with disabilities and encourage others to consider accessibility and inclusion in their actions and decisions.

Lastly, I will also lead by example by demonstrating competence, independence, and confidence in my abilities. Show others that disability does not define me or limit my capabilities.

How can self-care be nurtured while managing a disability?

Self-care for me is about nurturing my body, mind, and spirit, and making choices that support my overall well-being. I approach self-care by taking enough rest when I am stressed, taking my nutrition seriously, and prioritising hydration.

Also, I prioritise activities that bring me joy and fulfillment, whether by spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, or engaging in creative activities like writing or designing.

How have you been coping with accessibility challenges, such as in transportation and public places?

I can’t say I have challenges in navigating accessibility to public places except for the bank in my school environment where I can’t enter without someone helping me to control the machine. Aside from that, I have no accessibility challenges to public places.

Can you discuss any initiatives or projects you’re involved in that relates to promoting disability rights?

Yes, I’ve been part of different projects to support disability rights.

In 2021, I spoke at an event called “Abilities in Disability” held at the Ondo State Hearing Impaired School.

I’m also a member of a project called “The Abled, Not Disabled” that focuses on social impact.

I lead the team for “What Makes the Difference.”

We’re planning to launch the “Harmonising the Bridges” project later this year.

Lastly, I’m also working on writing a book about inclusion.

What are your goals for the future, both personally and professionally?

My goal is to fulfil God’s purposes for my life by giving to the needy, helping the helpless, showing love, motivating, and encouraging the depressed. It also includes preaching inclusion till our world becomes a better place for everyone regardless of their special abilities.

Can you share any memorable moments of triumph or achievement since your amputation that you’re particularly proud of?

I have a couple of memorable moments but I am proud of my undergraduate studies achievement. It was a big success for me.

What message would you like to convey to society about the capabilities and potential of individuals with disabilities?

My message is that individuals with disabilities are valuable members of society. We possess a wealth of talents, skills, and potential that often goes underestimated. The truth remains that disability does not define our worth or limit our ability to contribute to society in meaningful ways. I hereby plead with society to recognise and embrace the abilities and perspectives of individuals with disabilities by fostering inclusive environments and providing equal opportunities. Together, we can unlock the full potential of every person, regardless of their physical differences.

I want to expatiate more about the word inclusion. Inclusion is about treating everyone the way we want to be treated. It’s how we think and act towards others, and how they treat us in return. It’s about giving everyone the chance to learn and grow together.

Being inclusive means being intentional. It’s about recognising and removing barriers so that everyone can be part of the society.

Now, let’s talk about including people with disabilities. Disability inclusion is about making sure that people with disabilities are part of everything we do. It’s about treating them equally and giving them the same opportunities as everyone else.

Disability inclusion is something everyone can do. It’s about accepting and celebrating differences.

Yes, it’s possible to create a world where people with disabilities are fully included. And it starts with each of us. Let’s all work together to make it happen.
