The embattled chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Akwa Ibom State chapter, Dr Emem Abraham, who was said to have been impeached along with the vice, Dr Aniekan Utuk on Tuesday declared that she is still the substantive chairman of the association in the state
She stated that all her executive members are still intact, except the erstwhile secretary, Dr Usenobong Akpan.
Akpan had, on Monday announced the removal of the chairman, Abraham and vice chairman, Dr Aniekan Utuk, citing gross misconduct as reasons for their impeachment.
Addressing journalists at Doctors’ Mess, Uyo, the erstwhile secretary, who assumed the role of acting chairman by hierarchy, said the removal followed a motion duly moved during the association’s Ordinary General Meeting at its Secretariat, KM 8, Nwaniba Road, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
“At the Ordinary General Meeting of the association which was held on 2nd June, 2023, at the NMA Secretariat, Uyo, the Congress, in its wisdom, moved a motion for the impeachment of the Chairman and Vice Chairman, citing gross misconduct. By virtue of hierarchy in the association; as the Secretary, I was made to be the Acting Chairman,” Akpan said.
But speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday, the chairman, who is the only female chairman of the association in the state, urged the public to disregard the information about her impeachment, adding that appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken against the erstwhile secretary, who is now parading himself as acting chairman.
She stated, “The news is that Prof. Emem Abraham is still the 18th chairman of NMA Akwa Ibom branch with the entire State Officers Committee intact except the suspended secretary who has decided to parade himself as the acting chairman.
“Please disregard any other information, NMA Akwa Ibom state is run by Prof Emem Abraham led SOC, every other member is in that SOC except the erstwhile Secretary,” she said.
She alleged that the erstwhile secretary had been showing signs of insubordination, adding that on two occasions he had flouted instructions, leading to his suspension by the State Executive Council.
According to her, Akpan is currently being investigated by the disciplinary committee of the association, adding that he had in the past unilaterally sabotaged resolutions of the Congress.
Abraham further explained that the association’s ordinary general meeting held on June 2, 2024, went into a recess due to the disruptive conduct of some member
She noted that the recess was necessary to enable the leadership of the union to engage security agencies to safeguard lives and properties.
She revealed that the OGM was later convened virtually on June 3, 2024, by 5:00 pm, and had over 180 members in attendance, and no impeachment process was instituted against her or the Vice Chairman.
