The wave of defections that have swept across the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the past few days is unprecedented. Major players in the ruling party have been witnessed to have changed allegiance, a practice that is usually associated with election periods in Nigeria. The nation no doubt is about to witness another transition few months from now, and politicians have started to jump from one political party to another.
Senator Bukola Saraki, the leader of the 8th Senate, alongside the Governors of Kwara, Benue and Sokoto have all seen to have exited the ruling party. After series of persuasion from the leadership of the APC to persuade key stakeholders in the party from exiting, it seems all efforts have fallen on deaf ears. According to news and reports, it appears more defections would come soon as the elections date move closer.
Amidst all these incidences, there seems to be someone who is afraid of the Senate President’s move right now, and it is no doubt President Muhammadu Buhari. Whether anyone likes it or not, Bukola’s Saraki political manoeuvrings is top notch. He is way above this political game, as far as Nigeria is concerned. If he (Bukola Saraki) should sneeze, Muhammadu Buhari should be concerned. Beginning from how he emerged as the leader of the 8th senate till how he overcame at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Senator Bukola Saraki has been one step ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari’s politics.
Although the APC chairman in the person of Adams Oshiomhole have said the defections wouldn’t affect the party’s victorious outcome in the coming 2019 elections, whether this would be the case, time will tell. But if there is someone who is losing his sleep over all that is happening, it is definitely President Muhammadu Buhari. He sure knows that his time and his stay in Aso Rock is almost coming to an end.
