Oluyemi Oluleke Osinbajo is the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He was born on the 8th of March, 1957 at Creek Hospital, Lagos. He is married to an amiable woman, Dolapo Osinbajo and they are blessed with children. He obtained his LLB degree from the University of Lagos in 1978, and LLM from London School of Economics and Political Science, a member of Nigeria’s inner bar who was nominated as the Vice-Presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) on 17 December 2014.
Yemi Osinbajo got his primary school education at Corona School. From 1969 to 1975, Osinbajo attended Igbobi College Yaba where he won the following prizes: the State Merit Award 1971; the School Prize for English Oratory, 1972; Adeoba Prize for English Oratory 1972-75; Elias Prize for Best Performance in History (WASC) – 1973, School Prize for Literature (HSC), 1975; African Statesman Intercollegiate Best Speaker’s Prize, 1974. In 1978, he graduated from the University of Lagos where he was awarded the Bachelor of Laws or LLB. In obtaining a Second Class Upper Degree, he received the Graham-Douglas Prize for Commercial Law. In 1979, before Osinbajo was admitted to practise as a barrister and solicitor of Nigeria’s Supreme Court, he undertook the mandatory one year professional training at the Nigerian Law School.
He underwent his internship at the law firm of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. In 1980, he attended the London School of Economics & Political Science, where he obtained a Master of Laws. He also did his National Youth Service with the Bendel Development and Planning Authority (BDPA) as a legal officer. From 1981 to 1988, Osinbajo was engaged by the University of Lagos as Lecturer.
Later, he was was appointed as Special Adviser to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, (legal advice and litigation), Prince Bola Ajibola SAN. At the age of 33, he became a Professor of Law in 1990. Afterwards, Osinbajo established a law practice (Osinbajo, Kukoyi & Adokpaye) as a partnership, while he concurrently was a Professor of Law and Head of Department of Public Law (1997–1999). From 1999 to 2007, he served as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice after Bola Ahmed Tinubu had just been elected as Governor of the State in May 1999.
He was appointed Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in 1999 and reappointed for a second term in 2003. During the period of his public service, he commenced the Lagos State justice reform project. A prominent feature of that project was the establishment of the Directorate for Citizens’ Rights (DCR) which provides free legal services and legal representation to indigent citizens of the state. This initiative gave a voice to many who would otherwise not have a way to access their rights. Yemi Osinbajo is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and was a Senior Partner in the Law firm of Simmons Cooper Partners.
In June 2007, Yemi Osinbajo became Senior Partner at the law firm of SimmonsCooper Partners. He was also a visiting Professor of Law, Department of Public Law, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos. In 2013, under the auspices of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yemi and other notable Nigerians designed and produced a manifesto for the new political party. As a result, in March 2014, the Roadmap project was presented. It included a free schools meal plan, a conditional cash transfer to the 25 million poorest Nigerians if they enrol children in school and immunise them.
On December 17, 2014, the presidential candidate of the APC, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) announced Prof. Yemi Osibajo as his running mate and vice-presidential candidate during the 2015 General Elections. Yemi Osibajo is married to Oludolapo Osinbajo and they have three children
