There is a saying that readily comes to mind anytime one sees or experiences an anomaly. I have heard people say it over and over again in expressing perhaps something that is a bizarre, and which shouldn’t have been or heard in any sane parlance. The saying goes does: “wonder shall never end.” The serious exchange that had taken place in the past few hours between the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Police Force is nothing short of wonder. I believe you know the gist already, but in case you are yet to come across it, here is just the bottom line of the conundrum.
Three highly respected police officers on a covert operation had successfully apprehended a notorious kingpin of a kidnapping syndicate in Taraba State by the name Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume, who is now at large. Based on the statement released by the Nigeria Police Force via their twitter handle, it appeared that in the course of transporting the said criminal, the police operatives were intercepted by a group of soldiers, which opened fire on the police personnel at close range, killing all the three police officers in charge of the operation, injured a civilian in the process and then released the said notorious kidnapper. Now, you don’t need to think too far or too deep for you to know there is something about that incident that is not adding up.
There are a number of pieces that can be put together from this incident. First is the fact that there is a possible collaboration between Nigeria security personnel and some of these highly placed criminals in our society. Of course, this assertion should not be strange to you, that such collaborations exist between the force of good and that of evil. But incidents like this are only meant to clear your doubts about that. Secondly, this incident has revealed clearly the level of animosity between the Nigerian security agencies. It had revealed a lack of trust and collaboration between them. No wonder insecurity continues to thrive, despite having as President a first-class retired general.
Now, the bitter truth is this. If our security agencies can’t exercise some level of decorum and fashion out a means through which they can resolve their differences and collaborate, I think every Nigerian should just be wary of their own security. It means we all should just continually be on guard and trust God all the time for our own security and safety. Incidences like this shouldn’t even have made it to the public eye if there is cooperation, brotherliness and a deep sense of duty amongst our security institutions. It was even shocking to me, that after President Muhammadu Buhari met with the service chiefs yesterday, and was properly briefed about the situation, the twitter handle of the Nigeria Police Force was still twitting about the matter, seeking sympathy from members of the public.
In all of these brouhaha, does the president even care at all? There is this picture of our dear president in Aso Villa, relaxed and unbothered, with a toothpick in his mouth, and his legs crossed, watching himself on television, probably on NTA I think. The picture really tell a thousand thing. It showed a president who isn’t under pressure, after all, there is no election again for now to worry about. The road to 2023 has been cleared, and he is already travelling on it. Another thing, those who would form his cabinet has been screened and so, every other national issues can wait. I laugh!!!
Omoyele Sowore has been kept in custody for a revolution that the government had adjudged as unsuccessful. The hypocrisy of the Nigerian government stinks to the high heavens, and one wonders at times why a government behaves in such an irrational manner. Sowore, a former presidential contender in the last elections had called for a revolution against the incessant government failures in almost every fibre of the society. He was eventually picked up in Lagos in the early hours of Saturday, August 3, 2019 ahead of the scheduled kick off date of the revolution slated for Monday 5th August, 2019 by the DSS operatives.
Despite Sowore’s incarceration, the planned revolution still held in some parts of the nation on the kick off date, although met with some resistance from the state’s operatives in the persons of the police and army, repelling and maltreating peaceful protesters. If Garba Shehu, a spokesperson for President Muhammadu Buhari had said the revolution was unsuccessful, then why the continued detention of Omoyele Sowore? Why must they go that far, securing a court injunction to detain him for the next 45 days?
One of the disturbing hallmark of this Buhari’s administration has been the continuous silence of dissident voices. With constant attacks and crippling of press freedom, this administration has shown that it will stop at nothing until everyone complies with the anomalies that is being witnessed on a daily basis in Nigeria. Democracy allows for people to voice their opinions and point out to government in a civil manner, where it is failing in its responsibilities. But when it comes to the said democratic government suppressing every divergent opinions with state apparatus, then such a government is graduating to becoming a dictatorship.
Sowore may have been kept somewhere, but sure, the seed of the revolution has been sowed. Whether now or later, it will germinate! But I think President Buhari should just be wary of how he would love to remembered after now; because his days in Aso Rock and as Nigeria’s president, are already numbered.
