Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed his disappointment in Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Sanwo-Olu described it as a “very sad loss” in a series of tweets on Monday. He praised the Super Eagles for giving their all throughout the tournament, but acknowledged that the defeat came down to fine margins.
During the tournament, Lagos State set up 25 viewing centres where thousands of people gathered to watch the matches. Sanwo-Olu highlighted the power of football in bringing people together and expressed his pride in the team’s performance, both in victory and in defeat.
In addition, the governor congratulated William Troost-Ekong for being named the Player of the Tournament. Troost-Ekong played a crucial role throughout the tournament, contributing a goal in the final match. However, his efforts were not enough to secure a victory for Nigeria.
Ivory Coast claimed their third AFCON trophy with goals from Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller, while Troost-Ekong scored the lone goal for Nigeria. Despite the loss, Sanwo-Olu encouraged the Super Eagles to rebuild and come back stronger in future competitions. He recognized their achievements and urged them to continue representing the nation with pride.
