German business morale fell more than expected in July, the Ifo business sentiment survey showed on Monday, as the institute that compiles it said high energy prices and looming gas shortages had left Europe’s largest economy on the cusp of recession. The Ifo institute’s closely watched business climate index dropped to 88.6, its lowest in more than two years and below the 90.2 forecast in a Reuters poll of analysts. June’s reading was marginally revised down to 92.2. “Recession is knocking on the door. That can no longer be ruled out,” said Ifo surveys head Klaus Wohlrabe. Germany faces the…

Federal Reserve officials are likely to hit a key milestone this week with an interest rate hike that effectively ends pandemic-era support for the U.S. economy and begins to test whether growth can continue without the central bank’s active help. The Fed is expected to raise its benchmark overnight interest rate by three-quarters of a percentage point to a target range of 2.25% to 2.50% at the end of a two-day policy meeting on Wednesday. That would match the high hit before the COVID-19 pandemic and lift rates to a level officials see as roughly “neutral,” or no longer supporting…

Between the backlogged orders from Christmas, ongoing high demand, and an improving flow of products from around the world, goods flooded into the United States in the first three months of this year at a record $3.4 trillion annual pace. It was good news, evidence that U.S. consumers felt flush enough to spend, and that global supply chains were healing after many months of disarray due to the pandemic. But it also caused one of the largest ever import-led hits to U.S. gross domestic product, making it seem as if the nation’s economy was ailing rather than that the world…

American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O) on Thursday posted its first quarterly profit without U.S. government aid since the COVID-19 pandemic began as strong summer travel demand generated the highest quarterly revenue in its history. American’s shares were down 6.2% at $14.26 in morning trade. The company expects non-fuel costs to be up as much as…

Ford Motor Co (F.N) on Thursday said it will import lower-cost lithium iron batteries for its North American electric pickup trucks and SUVs from Chinese battery champion CATL (300750.SZ), as it works on a broader alliance with CATL and an array of separate deals to secure battery and battery materials into the next decade. Ford Vice President Lisa Drake said the automaker plans to secure lithium-iron, or LFP, batteries from a new 40 GWh factory in North America starting in 2026. Drake would not say if that factory would be built by CATL. Reuters reported in May that CATL was looking at U.S.…

University teachers won a major battle yesterday: the government is ready to meet most of their demands. Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu got marching orders from President Muhammadu Buhari to end the industrial actions by university-based unions. The President also directed the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, to hands off negotiations with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
