Says constitution bars him from going beyond two terms President Muhammadu Buhari has declared that the nation’s constitution statutorily barred him from going beyond two terms as President. This is just as he said he was looking forward to leaving office by May 29, 2023. Speaking Thursday during a courtesy visit to the palace of Emir of Lafia, retired Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad 1, the President stressed that he has no intention whatsoever to stay beyond the constitutionally recognised two terms of office as leader of Nigeria. He said: ”The traditional ruler is on a terminal appointment. Constitutionally, we (elected…
A former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Atahiru Jega, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to delay any further appending his signature to the amended electoral bill, since signing such bill into law would go a long way in enhancing the confidence of Nigerians in the nation’s electoral process. Jega stated this in an interactive session with the media Wednesday, after delivering a keynote address at the 117th anniversary of the Rotary Club in Lagos. He stated that though there were noticeable gaps in the bill, such should not prevent the president from signing the…
Hearing in the bail application of detained Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari, before a Federal High Court, Abuja, has suffered a setback following the denial of service of the bail application by the federal government. Kyari has been in custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) since his arrest last week by the police and subsequent transfer to the NDLEA for investigation “over his involvement in a 25kg cocaine deal”. However, days after his arrest and detention at the NDLEA, Kyari filed a fundamental human rights suit against the federal government, describing the drug trafficking allegations…

Now that presidential aspirants are crawling out of the political wood works, the media has to raise the issue of political restructuring of Nigeria. Nigerians who want restructuring, and those who do not, deserve to know the position of the aspirants before they emerge as presidential candidates. The media and the electorate cannot allow the aspirants to sit on the fence on this matter; they cannot skirt around this most important issue in Nigeria. That journalists, civil society organisations, youths, professionals and labour must put the feet of presidential aspirants to the fire of restructuring is an irreducible minimum. Several…
Abimbola Adelakun Over the weekend, alleged political activists in Alimosho, Lagos staged a mock funeral for Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola. To display the coffin of a man still alive is a poignant symbolism, one instinctually understood by witnesses embedded in the local culture as a severance of his connection to the society of the living. For a politician especially, a mock funeral ritual de-affirms their mandate. Politicians typically derive their legitimacy from popular support as much as from formal articles of power, and a mock funeral qualifies them as a persona non grata. Staging a mock funeral for a…
Niran Adedokun Amongst many other things, the late sage said in that speech: “It is axiomatic that man can create nothing. But, by an intelligent and purposive application of the exertions of his body and mind, he can exploit natural resources to produce goods and services for immediate consumption and for capital outlay. Therefore, other things being equal, the healthier his body and the more educated his mind, the greater will be his morale and the more efficient and economical he becomes as a producer and consumer” — Obafemi Awolowo (Man is the Sole Dynamic in Nature, 1974).…
Manchester United were spared a damaging and deserved defeat by Atletico Madrid on Wednesday as Anthony Elanga’s late goal rescued them a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Champions League last 16. Atletico outplayed a sluggish United for the majority of the match at the Wanda Metropolitano and might have considered Joao Felix’s early goal scant reward heading into the second leg at Old Trafford in three weeks’ time. But rather than extend their advantage, Atletico squandered it, Elanga racing onto a Bruno Fernandes through ball and applying a cool finish with 10 minutes left to earn United…
