Manchester United defender Luke Shaw accused his side of lacking enough aggression, intensity and motivation after a meek 1-0 home defeat to Wolves on Monday. A fourth league defeat in 10 games at Old Trafford this season leaves United still languishing in seventh, four points adrift of the top four. United was expected to mount a title challenge this season after adding Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane to a squad that finished second to Manchester City last season. But the Red Devils are 22 points behind City at the top of the table and closer to rock bottom…

“Your potential is unlimited. Aspire to a higher place. Believe in your abilities, in your tasks, in your judgment”– Bryan Adams. Big congratulations to you, my dearly beloved readers – my ever faithful friends and fantastic fans, to be alive, hale and hearty to witness the beginning of yet another year. For us to have survived the chequered year, 2021 with the upsurge in the killings of innocent citizens across the land, several preventable accidents and the creeping in on us of the fast-spreading Omicron variant of COVID-19 virus is a true feat! Our survival can only be attributed to…
Tony Ademiluyi When the battle against the sinister force of apartheid in South Africa which was dismantled with the emergence of black majority rule led by Madiba Nelson Mandela in 1994 is told, one name will forever remain prominent. That name is Desmond Mpilo Tutu. Tutu initially wanted to be a medical doctor but his parents’ abject poverty threw the spanner in the works of that noble dream to save lives. He then turned his attention to the teaching profession and qualified as a teacher in 1951. He spent four years there and encountered his first brush with apartheid when…
Alade Rotimi-John Rave reviews, ingenious repartee, angry disputations, frenzied denunciation of alleged untruths or mis-statement, contemptuous dismissal of chronological inexactitude and a general paroxysm of passion have expectedly greeted a book that has made saints of gnomes or persons otherwise considered unworthy of the highly eulogistic account of their wondrous deeds. Akande’s My Participations has participated, albeit as a poor player, in the literary tradition of hagiography or the effusive over praise of a work’s subject matter. In his book, Baba Akande threw darts at different directions and thereby maligned diverse persons. But he exonerated Tinubu for the very reasons…
Sudan’s civilian Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok resigned Sunday, more than two months after a coup and following another deadly crackdown on protesters, with the military now firmly in control. Sudan had been undergoing a fragile journey toward civilian rule since the 2019 ouster of autocrat Omar al-Bashir, but was plunged into turmoil when military leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan launched his coup on October 25 and detained Hamdok. Hamdok was reinstated on November 21 under a deal promising elections for mid-2023, but local media had recently reported he had been absent from his office for days, with rumours swirling over…
A huge fire that destroyed a large part of South Africa’s parliament has been brought under control, firefighters said on Monday, a day before a suspect was due to appear in court over the blaze. The fire broke out early Sunday in the oldest wing of the parliament complex and dozens of crews battled throughout the day to extinguish the flames. “The fire was brought under control during the night,” spokesman Jermaine Carelse said, adding that the blaze was still burning in the part of the building where it began, which was completed in 1884 and has wood-panelled rooms. Officials…
Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has ruled out the possibility of losing Edinson Cavani this month. Cavani has not played his last game for Manchester United, insists Rangnick (Photo: AP) The Uruguayan has scored 19 goals in 49 appearances for the Red Devils since joining on a free transfer in October 2020. However, the 34-year-old’s time in England has also been beset by injury problems and a controversial ban last season for using what the English Football Association deemed racist language in a social media post. Cavani, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has been linked…
