The Lagos State Government has approved the reopening of schools for all classes in public and private schools across the state beginning from Monday, while boarders in public schools are to resume on Sunday. Disclosing this Thursday, Honourable Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, said this had been an unprecedented year with the recent happenings that had regrettably led to frequent closure of schools with attendant learning disruptions faced by all children. “We pray and hope that there will be no more disruptions in the academic calendar. However, the State Government will always regard the safety of pupils/students, parents and…

Abimbola Adelakun aadelakun@punchng.com The days after Black Tuesday, that fateful day when soldiers committed atrocities at the Lekki tollgate, was the Apocalypse, the revealing of the vulnerability of our collective existence. As the artifices that have upheld our fragile civilisation ripped off, the reality of the horror that underpins our everyday existence was un-concealed. By Wednesday morning, law and order had virtually broken down in Nigeria, especially in Lagos. Given the number of people killed throughout the state during the #EndSARS protests, it was not surprising that some people decided to hit back at the government in a spectacular…
Niran Adedokun niranadedokun@gmail.com It is unfortunate that some members of Nigeria’s power elite still make a joke of the unfortunate uprising the country faced last week. On Monday, Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, in what appears like a low-key admission of the presence of his men at the Lekki tollgate plaza where peaceful protesters came under gun-fire last Tuesday, equated the entire situation with attempts by certain unnamed people to destabilise the country. Admittedly, the army chief made a lame attempt to recognise the peaceful nature of #EndSARS protests, but a statement issued by the acting…
Jide Ojo Do Nigerians trust their elected and appointed political leaders? Not much. Many Nigerians are very cynical and sceptical about whatever policies, programmes and projects government may initiate. Do you blame the citizens? Please don’t. Government at all levels hasn’t earned the people’s trust and confidence over the decades. This month marks 60 years of the country’s political independence and there isn’t much to show for it in terms of development. The much-touted dividends of democracy have been elusive and as such people are generally disillusioned and disenchanted. THE #EndSARS protests and their unsavoury aftermath are pointers to the…

Police officers lynched in the wake of the violence instigated by the nationwide youth demonstration against police brutality will not die in vain, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pledged. The state government, yesterday, directed Lagos State Scholarship Board to award scholarships to the children of the slain officers up to the university level. Twenty-nine Divisional Police Stations and 17 Police Posts were razed by hoodlums disguised as protesters. Also, six police officers were lynched, 36 critically injured, while 71 police operational vehicles were torched. In spite of the loss, the police said they remained undeterred in performing their…
•Urges Nigerians to promote national unity President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday gave his administration a thumb up in efforts to combat security challenges in the North-west and North-central zones. The president, at the launch of the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) Emblem and Appeal Fund in Abuja, also noted that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity. He stressed the need to guard jealously the unity of the nation, which he said was won at a great cost. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, in a statement yesterday, said the president also appealed to…
But for the United States’ lone opposition, Nigeria’s candidate for the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, would have been declared the winner of the race yesterday. Despite securing the vote of 163 of the 164 members of the trade organisation, the former coordinating minister for the economy and minister of finance of Nigeria could not be declared the head of the WTO because of the objection by the US, which cited lack of experience and procedural issues for its stance. By the organisation’s selection rules, its DG has to emerge by consensus. But the majority,…
Martin Keown says he wants to see more consistency in Arsenal’s tactics and team selection. Keown thinks that Mikel Arteta is the right man for the job, but should stick to one system and style of play. Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has said that Mikel Arteta is repeating the same mistakes that his predecessor Unai Emery made at Arsenal, as he constantly tinkers with the team and the system they play in. Arsenal have had an up and down start to their 2020-21 Premier League season. The Gunners have endured a patchy run of form in recent weeks, the latest being a 1-0…
Liverpool beat FC Midtjylland 2-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday but they currently face an injury crisis. Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Fabinho are all currently injured, as the club faces a tough fixture pile. Despite recording an important 2-0 win against FC Midtjylland on Tuesday evening, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp attended his post-match conference an unhappy man. The Reds went into the Champions League game without influential defender Virgil van Dijk, who has been ruled out for several months after sustaining a serious injury in the Merseyside derby two weeks ago. With Joel Matip also sidelined through injury, Klopp was forced to field…
