Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has blamed former President Olusegun Obasanjo, as partly responsible for Nigeria’s weak infrastructural base, saying that instead of paying off Nigeria’s external debts, the ex-Nigerian leader should have invested in capital projects across the country. According to Fashola, previous governments which he said had access to a lot of money, under-invested in the country’s infrastructure, saying if he had the $12 billion, like the Olusegun Obasanjo government in 2005, he would have built rails and more roads. The former Lagos State governor, who has been minister under the present administration since its…

‘The Commission shall in the discharge of its functions under this Act not be subject to the direction or control of any other person or authority.’ – Section 3(14) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act- 2000 (ICPC Act) Following the removal of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as the Chairman of the EFCC, it was obvious that some forces that were against the good work of Ribadu were at play. As the Chairman of the Senate Committee overseeing the EFCC, I thought it necessary to protect the structural and operational autonomy of the EFCC by amending the EFCC Act…

Yemi Akinbode, a stakeholder of the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State writes that the heap of blame poured on Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State over the recent woes of the party is misplaced Since his ascension to the mantle of leadership of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has become the most popular governor in Nigeria, and perhaps the most maligned occupant of that position in recent times. Incidentally, most opposition to his leadership have come mainly from some elements in the ruling All Progressives Party (APC) not necessarily because he is not a…

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said: “Fortunately for us, our walls are not yet broken but there are obvious cracks that could lead to a break if not properly addressed.” Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, said: “The cracks are unhealthy but we expect the vice-president to calm nerves and not make a pronouncement that will aggravate the situation.” There you have it: what is right and what is wrong with Nigeria. New thoughts and truth and old fears about our 60-year-old independent nation held hostage by the myth of its fragility. We have been conditioned all these years to see evil, hear…

Barcelona’s new double-act delivered again as Lionel Messi and Ansu Fati led them to a 3-0 victory at Celta Vigo in La Liga on Thursday, despite Clement Lenglet being sent off in the first half. After scoring twice in Barca’s opening game of the season, Fati fired struck early at a blustery Balaidos, only for Lenglet to collect a second yellow card in the 42nd minute for pulling back Denis Suarez. But even down to 10, Ronald Koeman’s side was undeterred and Messi made the lead more comfortable shortly after half-time, his weaving run and shot diverted in for an…

Ayo Olukotun When Nigerians celebrate the many achievements of their fellow citizens overseas, they wonder how people from the same nation can perform admirably abroad, and deplorably at home. In answering this question, and cooperating in the search for answers, ideas for sustainable transformation can emerge.” Emeritus Professor Richard Joseph, in Nigeria’s Dismal Tunnel, is there an exit? Wednesday, September 16, 2020. For a nation, anniversaries are important occasions comparable to birthdays in the life of individuals. Indeed, one of the connotations of the word anniversary in the French is birthday, bringing out thereby the intimacy, and the memory which…

Niran Adedokun nadedokun@gmail.com Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s acknowledgement, on Sunday, of cracks sufficient to cause a breakup of Nigeria is significant in certain respects. First, it was the first time a leader of Osinbajo’s status owned up to the reality of cracks let alone the dangers that they portend to the survival of the country. Hitherto, national leaders played the ostrich, and brushed aside suggestions by more honest citizens as to the increasingly precarious route along which the country sails. You will see an indication of this in the reaction of the Arewa Consultative Forum, which even while accepting that cracks…

Abimbola Adelakun aadelakun@punchng.com Today is the 60th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence. Given the sheer indifference to this date that the people have exuded, it is hard to claim this as a joyful occasion. Nigerians are barely displaying any excitement at having come this far. Why should they? People are hungry and angry, and the gnawing precariousness of their social conditions has made the country so tense that our centrifugal impulses are being unleashed. There is perhaps no other time in Nigeria’s recent history that is as joyless and uncertain as this one. People are caught in the vicious cycles of…
