By: Reuben Abati My favorite passage from the many essays by the 20th Century management theorist, prophet of customer-centricism, and dialectician, Peter F. Drucker, on the subject of change and innovation has to be his argument that we now live in a modern era where everything changes at the speed of light. To be able to cope in this season of creative destruction, and disruption, the manager of the future must constantly innovate and grow. Skills die faster in the age of constant change, hence, it is only the worker who is constantly developing himself and his or her skills-set…

Top-ranked defending champion Novak Djokovic retired from his US Open match Sunday after dropping the first two sets to Stan Wawrinka, sending the Swiss three-time Grand Slam champion into the quarter-finals. Djokovic, who won four of the past five Slam crowns and 16 overall, was in pain from a nagging left shoulder injury while 34-year-old Wawrinka, who also beat Djokovic in the 2016 US Open final, showed himself a true title contender. “It helped me big time knowing I have the game to beat him on that court,” Wawrinka said. “It’s never the way you want to finish a match.…
Serena Williams overcame an injury scare to maintain her pursuit of a record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title at the US Open on Sunday while Roland Garros champion Ashleigh Barty and Karolina Pliskova crashed out in the last 16. Williams, a six-time US Open winner, romped to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Croatian 22nd seed Petra Martic to set up a quarter-final with China’s Wang Qiang, the conqueror of world number two Barty. The 37-year-old American star required a medical timeout in the second set after rolling her right ankle as she approached the net but promptly recovered to reach…
By Raji Adegoke Anxiety, mood swing, reduced energy, fatigue, significant apathy to and diminished interests in activities, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, hopelessness, marked changes in appetite, sleep pattern and poor self-concept, all of these are symptoms of depression and were clearly exhibited by Betty, the subject in the previous article. These symptoms, remain, by clinical standard, the criteria for diagnosing clinical depression in persons. More serious risk factors may include the entertainment of taking one’s life (suicide ideation) and false sensory perception (Did somebody actually believe that Betty saw the word “depression” every single day in the course of her traumatic…
Eze Onyekpere When self-evident truths manifest and their manifestation leads to turmoil, upheavals and a lot of chain reactions, the expectation is that reasonable human beings would sit down and take rational decisions to stem the challenges arising from these truths. It is also an aphorism that the truth sets human beings free and anyone that lives in denial of the truth denies his own very existence. Questions, issues and challenges that are swept under the carpet, under the pretence that they either do not exist, or that they will go away on their own do not disappear. Instead, they…
Segun Olatunji At the slightest disagreement with the Muhammadu Buhari government, it becomes jumpy. It propels its primordial impulse of insecurity to take over its diacritical instinct of winnowing a bluff from substance, a threat from criticism, and a peaceful protest from bloody revolution. It only embraces sameness of ideas. Any dissention is perceived as a source to be eliminated. Any dispassionate court ruling against her is flouted with arrogance. This panicky government must be run through a crash programme in conflict management as an integral component of statecraft. In a variegated society like Nigeria, it is not only insulting…
Tunde Odesola Frugality and generosity aren’t bedfellows. But they’re diametric financial dispositions that define the Ijesa and the Ijebu. The ‘Osomalo’ imagery portrays the typical Ijesa man as an ultra-frugal fellow, who could stoop at a spot for a thousand years just to recover a debt even as the ‘Owo alare’ symbolism depicts the average Ijebu man as an extra-stingy character, who would never give or lend his money to anyone, insisting that the very money you see in his hand doesn’t belong to him; it belongs to ‘alare’ – someone else. Uhnn! The similar lifestyles of the Ijesa and…
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday stormed Owerri, the Imo state capital and arrested at least 20 suspects of cyber crime. The operatives of the anti-graft commission arrested the suspects about six days after some boys suspected to be fraudsters were apprehended in Owerri. Multiple sources confirmed the EFCC operation to THISDAY yesterday, describing how the operatives stormed Aladinma extension, Owerri and arrested the suspects of cyber crime. One of the sources said that the EFCC operatives struck while their targets were still asleep. He stated that apart from picking the suspects, cars, expensive phones and laptops were…
Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata admits his team must find their cutting edge after a frustrating start to the Premier League season. United’s season-opening 4-0 demolition of Chelsea is already a distant memory after Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Southampton showed the flaws in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. Daniel James’ brilliant opener was cancelled out by Jannik Vestergaard at St Mary’s. Even Kevin Danso’s second-half dismissal for Southampton could not inspire United, who have just five points from their opening four matches. United also blew the chance to win at Wolves when Paul Pogba missed a penalty in a 1-1 draw…
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson insists Sadio Mane’s touchline tirade at Burnley showed his side’s desire to win the Premier League. Mane launched into a furious rant after being substituted during Liverpool’s 3-0 win on Saturday. The Senegal winger was apparently annoyed by Mohamed Salah’s failure to pass to him moments earlier. Mane brushed past Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and had to be consoled by team-mates Henderson, James Milner and Roberto Firmino on the bench. Klopp claimed everything had been smoothed over after the latest incident of Salah opting to shoot instead of passing to a better-placed colleague. Henderson, however, said…
