Mrs Maryam Uwais, Special Adviser to the President on Social Investments, says the Federal Government will prosecute saboteurs of its Social Investment Programmes(SIPs). Uwais gave the warning in a statement by Justice Bibiye, Communications Manager, National Social Investment Office (NSIO), on Sunday in Abuja. Uwais said the Federal Government would continue to mainstream the principles of transparency, accountability and probity in the implementation of the SIPs of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. She said efforts were being intensified to track down those bent on sabotaging the SIPs by exploiting beneficiaries for personal gains, or sensationalise untruths to discredit the efforts at…

Tammy Abraham’s double saw Chelsea beat Norwich 3-2 at Carrow Road to hand Frank Lampard his first win in charge of the club. It was Chelsea who opened the scoring after just three minutes through Abraham’s well-taken goal, only for the hosts to equalise only 156 seconds later as local boy Todd Cantwell side-footed home from close range after some lovely build-up play. In what was an action-packed first half at a sun-drenched Carrow Road, however, the visitors soon found themselves back in front thanks to Mason Mount’s composed finish (17). Norwich fought back, though, as the in-form Teemu Pukki…
By: Dele Momodu Fellow Nigerians, I have decided to write on this topic today because of the dangerous giddiness I observe in many of our young ones today, especially on social media. I have no doubt that many of them love our country so passionately but are disappointed in how messy things have been. Many have struggled to go to school hoping to find something meaningful to do thereafter but no such luck. Many have become frustrated and despondent and desperate in the process. The resultant effect naturally is deep seated resentment and anger. But I read somewhere that…

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes Arsenal have become genuine title contenders following the recruitment of “amazing” new players. The only two teams boasting 100 per cent Premier League records this season square off in a tantalising encounter at Anfield on Saturday. Gunners boss Unai Emery could mark the occasion with a first start for club-record signing Nicolas Pepe, having handed home debuts to David Luiz and the impressive Dani Ceballos in last weekend’s 2-1 win over Burnley. Kieran Tierney and young forward Gabriel Martinelli have also joined the north London side, leaving Klopp with “zero doubt” that Arsenal are stronger than last…
Virgil van Dijk has revealed that Sergio Aguero is the toughest opponent he has ever come up against, while Roberto Firmino is the greatest player to have shared the dressing room with him. The Liverpool defender also named Jurgen Klopp as one of the best managers he has worked with in football. Liverpool spent £75 million to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in the January transfer window of 2018, making him the world’s most expensive defender at that time. The Dutchman has been performing superbly since making the switch, further establishing himself among the best defenders in the world. The 28-year…
Ken Ihedioha We’re constantly revolving in circles; and this perhaps accounts for our very slow growth in virtually all the development indices. In healthcare, infant mortality, infrastructure services, electricity generation, wealth creation, number of children out-of-school and lots more, the records are damning. Musing on his social media handle, Sunday Ogunyemi wrote: “In 1963, the World Bank and the UN predicted that five countries in the developing world would become manufacturing nations by the turn of the century – two countries in Asia, two countries in South America and Nigeria the only one from Africa. By the year 2000, all…
Oluwafemi Idowu The Senate under the leadership of Senator Ahmad Lawan, is planning to buy Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs for its 109 members at an estimated cost of about N50m each. The principal officers are billed to get additional vehicles. Although one of the senators, Abubakar Kyari, claimed that the vehicles would be given to them on loan, methinks, Kyari’s claim is a story meant for the gods as Nigerians know what is playing out at the National Assembly. This is not the first time both chambers would be buying vehicles for themselves and later monetise them at ridiculous prices…

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised Paul Pogba’s character and expressed disbelief over the racism directed at the Manchester United midfielder on social media. World Cup winner Pogba was the subject of discriminatory posts online after failing to convert a penalty in the 1-1 draw at Wolves on Monday. United condemned the abuse and pledged to take the “strongest course of action available” ahead of a meeting between the club, Twitter and anti-discriminatory body Kick It Out.
