SUPER Eagles’ head coach, Gernot Rohr has insisted that the only way he could embark on a refresher course with Bayern Munich is if the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) outlines the programmes it has for local coaches to also refresh their knowledge of the game. The NFF President, Amaju Pinnick had previously stated that Rohr would be heading to Germany on attachment with Bayern Munich to enable him to have a full grasp of the latest trend in football management. But Rohr in an exclusive interview with NationSport noted that even though going for the refresher course in Germany is…

Tunde Odesola The imagery of the ‘amukun’ is popular among the Yoruba. ‘Amukun’ is the Yoruba adjective for the knock-kneed. Knock-kneed is the turenchi for the pidgin expression, K-leg. K-leg is K-leg; an abnormal curve of the legs that causes the knees to touch while the feet are apart. I’ll recreate the ‘amukun’ imagery. One day, the ‘amukun’ set out on a journey down the hilly path to the marketplace. On that sweltering afternoon, the ‘amukun’ had 36 crates of doomed eggs placed on his head. The crates tilted at an obtuse angle, likelier to crash down than to be…

Tayo Oke Just so you know, there is an ongoing tussle inside the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom to find a replacement for the current leader and Prime Minister, Theresa May, who was ousted as leader of the party a few weeks ago. Whoever becomes the next leader of the party automatically assumes office as the UK’s Prime Minister. It is a strange way of deciding the head of a government, where less than 200,000 Conservative party members actually get to vote on who becomes their leader. Under the Parliamentary system, the Prime Minister is not a directly elective…

The 10-year old rape allegation against Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo in Las Vegas cannot be proven beyond reasonable doubt, prosecutors said on Monday. Ronaldo, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time and plays for the Italian club Juventus, has maintained he is innocent. Kathryn Mayorga filed a civil lawsuit in September 2018 in state court in Nevada accusing the athlete of raping her in a Las Vegas hotel penthouse suite in 2009, then paying her $375,000 in hush money. A woman called Las Vegas police on June 13, 2009 to report that…

South Africa’s apex court ruled Monday the country’s anti-corruption ombudswoman had been “deceitful” and ordered her to pay from her pocket part of the legal costs incurred in a row with the central bank. Busisiwe Mkhwebane is South Africa’s Public Protector — a position with a constitutional mandate to investigate public corruption and misconduct — but is viewed by some as an ally of graft-tainted ex-president Jacob Zuma who appointed her before he was ousted. Cyril Ramaphosa, who succeeded Zuma as president of the ruling ANC and of the country in a divisive contest, said Sunday he would take Mkhwebane…

Ireland’s Shane Lowry romped to victory in treacherous conditions to claim his maiden major title at the 148th British Open on Sunday, beating England’s Tommy Fleetwood by six shots. Here, AFP Sport takes a look at four key moments from the final round at Royal Portrush: Lowry avoids first-hole disaster The 32-year-old was in danger of seeing his four-shot overnight lead whittled down to just one on the first hole when he left a lengthy par putt a few feet short and Fleetwood struck a magnificent approach to within 10 feet. But the Englishman missed his birdie try and Lowry…

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa said Sunday he will challenge in court a watchdog body’s “fundamentally and irretrievably flawed” findings concerning a donation to his 2017 campaign to head the ruling party. “After careful study I have concluded that the report is fundamentally and irretrievably flawed,” Ramaphosa told reporters, adding that he has “decided to seek an urgent judicial review” of the findings concerning a controversial 500,000 rand ($36,000) donation. The country’s ombudswoman, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, said in an explosive report on Friday that Ramaphosa “deliberately misled the National Assembly” when he responded to an opposition question in parliament last November.…

It is an unwritten constitution that after every failed Nigeria mission to the Africa Cup of Nations, the managers are consumed. However, in spite of the Super Eagles lacklustre performance-the team struggled in all their games, culminating in the call by Nigerians that the manager, Gernot Rohr, should go, the German tactician looks set to survive the surge After the loss to the Desert Foxes of Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final last Sunday, in a game which the Super Eagles were the second-best for the better part of the encounter, it came as no surprise that soccer-loving…

BY DELE MOMODU Fellow Nigerians, I know some fanatical supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari and his ruling party APC will likely dismiss this intervention as coming from an alarmist or Prophet of doom, but so be it. History has taught me a lot of lessons and so has Literature done as well. Anyone familiar with Literary appreciation would have encountered what is often referred to as “tragic heroes”, an oxymoron of sorts. Many leaders usually end up as tragic figures because of their proclivities for obstinacy and obduracy. They are haters of criticism and truth who see enemies in every…
