The World Health Organisation (WHO) has lamented that Nigeria accounts for the highest case of measles on the globe. The Borno State Coordinator of WHO, Dr. Audu Idowu, was quoted in a statement on Wednesday to have said: “Despite the availability of safe and effective vaccines, Nigeria accounts for the highest burden of measles globally, with 3.3 million unimmunised children.” The statement signed by Eva Hinds, a Communication Specialist with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), said in order to tackle the growing cases of measles, the Nigerian Government is working in collaboration with UNICEF and WHO. The federal government has earmarked N43.5 billion for routine immunisation programme in 2019. The Director General Budget Office of the Federation Ben Akabueze made this disclosure in Abuja at the Nigeria Value for Money in the Health Sector Workshop. In his presentation, the DG budget said there was a need to scale-up allocation to primary health care and also called for equity in the allocation of funds to different areas in the health sector. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control ( NCDC ) has registered 83 deaths, 381 confirmed cases and 1,279 suspected cases of Lassa fever in 2019. Dr Kola Jinadu, Senior Technical Adviser to the NCDC Chief Executive Officer, disclosed this to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Tuesday.
