By Dele Momodu Fellow Nigerians, I had the rare honour of sitting and chatting with our Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, last Sunday, July 2, 2017, and it was such an amazing encounter. As you would probably have noticed on this page in the last few weeks, I’ve been visibly worried about the soaking tension in Nigeria. I’ve never been so agitated in a long time. Though we’ve had our fair share of challenges and tribulations as a people and country, we’ve always found a way to manage our differences and live in peace. Why then the sudden clamour for…
By Olusegun Adeniyi For a long time, I had held the notion that principal actors in the events that led to the collapse of the First Republic and its aftermath should document their accounts so that our generation and those after us can learn useful lessons. After reading “The First Regular Combatant: Brigadier General Zakariya Maimalari”, I am not so sure anymore. I am now inclined to believe that the scars may be too deep to engender dispassionate introspections and that Nigeria may be better off if the poison of that era is not passed to future generations by yesterday’s…
By Channels Tv A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Wednesday ordered the Federal Government to “immediately release to Nigerians information about the names of high-ranking public officials from whom public funds were recovered and the circumstances under which funds were recovered, as well as the exact amount recovered from each public official.” The judgment was delivered today by Hon Justice Hadiza Rabiu Shagari following a Freedom of Information suit number: FHC/CS/964/2016 brought by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP). The suit followed disclosure last year by the Federal Government of funds recovered from some high-ranking public officials and private…
By Pius Adesanmi These two countries sha! Nigeria and South Africa… Always at each other’s throats, always pretending to dislike each other, yet they avail the world of eerily similar plot lines… On TV, in my hotel room in Pretoria, I am trying to get some rest before talks and lectures begin. I have done Accra to Ottawa, Ottawa to London and Johannesburg in a week and it is starting to tell on the body and the system… Then I hear on TV that South African Airways is a failing enterprise existing only on bailouts. I am dazed. SAA resides…
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday ordered an interim forfeiture of the sums of N500m and $500,000 said to have been looted from the Paris Club refunds made by the Federal Government in favour of the 36 states of the federation. The money is said to have been recovered from two firms, First Generation Mortgage Bank Limited, and Gosh Projects Limited, and were allegedly linked to the Governor of Zamfara State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Abdulaziz Yari. According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the money were fraudulently diverted from the NGF’s bank…
By Reuben Abati The most discussed subject in Nigeria today is what is called “restructuring” and indeed so popular is this subject that it has attracted the attention of roadside commentators, the bright, the not-so-bright, the mischievous and the outrightly unintelligent all united by the singular claim that Nigeria belongs to all of us and we all have a right to determine its future. The last person who brought up this subject with me is a mechanic in Abeokuta! He had heard about Biafra, the Arewa youths, the President’s absence, Professor Osinbajo, Nnamdi Kanu, what Igbo leaders, Northern leaders and…
Kingdom Pathwalker Inspirationals (A.K.A kpInspirationals) is a business registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in Nigeria. While there are many media and publishing houses in Nigeria; kpInspirationals came with a strong vision to build an Africa-Leading Publishing company in Nigeria. The organization was founded in 2011 by Gboyega Adedeji, a young and passionate Nigerian; whose passion for sharing wisdom in writing is evident to all. He has been looked down by many platforms and publishing outfits across the world. Who then decided to create platform for others to share their own inspirations with little or no conditions. So far,…
In the latest (2017) universities ranking released by the National Universities Commission (NUC), Ladoke Akintola University Of Technology has been ranked number 21. Despite the hard times that the school is currently facing, and the inability of the governors of Oyo and Osun to resolve the crisis bedeviling the school, one would actually think the university would not even appear on the list at all. The state of our Universities in Nigeria is something that require urgent attention. Both Federal and State owned tertiary institutions continue to witness inadequate funding, and this can be seen from how two states in…
