Barcelona are confident of fending off interest from European giants and tying teenage defender Pau Cubarsi to a new contract, according to reports in Spain.
The 17-year-old has emerged as one of the revelations of La Liga this season. After impressing in training, Cubarsi was handed his debut by manager Xavi Hernandez in a Copa del Rey clash against Unionistas de Salamanca back in January. He has since gone on to make 13 appearances for the club across all competitions, chipping in with one assist.
His impressive performances haven’t gone unnoticed, with reports suggesting both Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea are monitoring his situation. However, Spanish outlet Sport, via PSG Talk, claims Barcelona are determined to keep hold of their young star. They are actively working on extending his contract before the end of the 2023-24 season.
A key part of the new deal will be a significantly increased release clause. According to reliable transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Catalan giants are planning a staggering €1 billion release clause to discourage potential suitors.
Whether Barcelona can successfully secure Cubarsi’s long-term future remains to be seen, but their confidence suggests they are prepared to fight off interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
