In a scathing critique of political leaders, former lawmaker and social critic Senator Shehu Sani expressed his deep dissatisfaction with the rampant looting of the national treasury. He highlighted the alarming reality that a few individuals in positions of power were consistently embezzling billions of naira on a daily basis, all the while the education sector languishes in neglect.
Senator Sani’s statement came in the wake of shocking allegations of financial misappropriation within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development. The ministry has recently faced intense scrutiny, with former minister Sadiya Umar-Farouq and now suspended Minister Betta Edu being interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding the alleged misconduct.
Expressing his dismay, Senator Sani pointed out the callousness of increasing tuition fees in public universities and polytechnics when there is supposedly insufficient funds to support public tertiary education. This contradiction becomes even more infuriating when juxtaposed with the revelation that billions of Naira are being siphoned off by a select few individuals.
In a social media post, Senator Sani wrote: “Every day brings new revelations of billions stolen by a handful of individuals, while tuition fees are callously increased in our public universities and polytechnics due to purportedly inadequate funds for public tertiary education.” This statement encapsulates the frustration felt by many who witness the blatant disregard for the education sector while corrupt practices continue unchecked.
