Corruption and Nigerian politics are Siamese twins. As a matter of fact, it has gotten to a point where one begin to think if this menace can ever go away. Even why it appears the nation has a President who says he detests corruption, we have seen under him how corruption is still thriving.
The chairman of his own political party, the All progressive Congress, where the president emerged from, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; has been accused by party members of making as much as $50 Million dollars in their just concluded political party primaries that has almost tear the party into pieces. Also, an APC Governor of Kano state, Abdullah Ganduje; had been caught on cameras, on different occasions; collecting kickbacks from contractors. As a matter of fact, President Muhammadu Buhari himself called him a good man while addressing journalists recently.
The Presidential Candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, Obi Ezekwesili, told Christine Amanpour of CNN that part of her agenda is to deregulate the economy in such a way that public officials will not have too much presence around the economy to be able to utilise it for personal gain, and to as well stop corruption. She noted that corruption thrives in a society when there was no incentive on the part of the people who govern to produce results.
She believed that by fixing our public procurement system, an avenue that allow corruption and corrupt officials to carry out their enterprise; the menace of corruption would be drastically reduced.
“I was one of the co-founders of Transparency International, and we know that corruption is a task on the poor and we already know that there are ways to tackle corruption. You prevent the opportunity for corruption, you reduce corruption and part of my agenda is to deregulate the economy in such a way that public officials don’t have too much presence in the economy to be able to utilise it for personal gain,” Ezekwesili said.
