The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) in Osun State has criticized the recent increase in tuition fees at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree. In a statement, the CDHR argued that the increase violates Nigerians’ right to accessible and affordable education, particularly at a time when fuel subsidies have been removed.
They called on the state government to immediately reverse the fee increase, claiming it goes against the electoral promises made by Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The CDHR emphasized that education is a basic human right and any attempt to commercialize it is unjust. Students and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have also voiced their disagreement with the fee increase.
The school’s spokesperson, Tope Alabi, defended the increase, stating that it was necessary given the current financial situation. A meeting has been scheduled between the school management and stakeholders in order to find a compromise.
