A boat mishap in Anambra State, Nigeria has left at least eight people dead and 38 others rescued. While the Anambra State Police Command stated that five people had died and 30 were rescued, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) confirmed the higher death toll.
The incident occurred between Thursday and Friday at Umumu Anam in Anambra West Local Government Area when a wooden engine boat carrying 50 passengers hit a snag and capsized. The boat was travelling from Idah in Kogi State to Onitsha in Anambra State.
NIWA expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
