I have tried really hard to make sense of why Dr. Kayode Fayemi would want to be Ekiti state Governor once again, considering the fact that he had a successful tenure between 2010 and 2014 when he was the executive governor of the state. I have been forced to ask a couple of Ekiti state indigenes that are my friends: what did Fayemi leave behind that he is going to pick in Ekiti State’s government house? Others have argued with me anyway, that the constitution allows the governor or president to spend maximum of two terms (which is eight years) and so, by virtue of that, he is eligible to contest again.
But as interesting as that may sound, I feel that provision should be for a governor or president who is contesting immediately after the expiration of his first tenure though, and not someone who was voted out through electoral means, and then coming back after so many years to seek re-election. I haven’t read that part of the constitution though, but if this argument happens to be true, then I think there is a lacuna in that part of the law. Someone may be tempted to think: didn’t Ayodele Fayose returned to contest and won? Well, we all know he didn’t even complete his first tenure before he was impeached, and was not ousted through an electoral system – whether fraudulently or not. Anyways, Fayemi is in the race already, there is nothing much anybody could do about that for now.
My thought then is this: I think Dr. Fayemi’s return to Ekiti State governorship race is more of a vendetta than having any plans for the people of the state. It is more of a revenge mission than the state’s developmental agenda. I mean, what exactly is in Fayemi’s manifesto right now (if there is any) that is/was different from what he had some years back? Is there a special program or a developmental agenda he has for the state to better the lots of its people? Is Fayemi running the APC agenda of trying to re-capture Ekiti and make it an APC state, so that APC agenda in the Southwest towards 2019 general elections can be smooth?
How I wish the Ekiti people can see beyond these entire charade that it is not about them, but about these politician’s own selfish agenda. Fayose and Fayemi are two sides of a bad coin. APC is a terrible party (by virtue of their performance at the Federal and some states level), and PDP is as equally terrible. Both of them have nothing to offer Nigerians. In his few years of his Ministerial assignment in the Ministry of Mines and Steel, what achievements can Fayemi lay claim to? What other ideas has he gotten or garnered, that he is coming back to improve Ekiti State with?
It is just so sad that Nigerians are Nigeria’s greatest problem. Most of the times, we don’t see beyond our nose. We complained of the heavy Militarization of Ekiti State during the 2014 elections that brought Fayose on board, how people were mishandled and movement of some certain people restricted, just because the elections must be won by the PDP that year. Isn’t it funny that the same script is playing itself out right now, how that the APC is reciprocating the same gesture Fayose and the PDP (at the centre then) meted on Fayemi that year? Now you would understand why I opined that Fayemi is here to revenge, and nothing else.
If eventually he wins on Saturday or the election rigged in his favor by the APC led Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari, it will only shock you how his four year tenure would fizzle out without accomplishing anything. I rest my case!
