Super Eagles’ former coach, Gernot Rohr, has admitted that losing the Nigerian job has cast a gloom over his future.
The German, who was relieved of his job by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Sunday, told the media on Monday that he felt a ‘huge frustration’ over the turn of events.
With less than three weeks to the kickoff of the African Cup of Nations in Cameroun, Rohr had already set his mind on how to test his wits against other teams from the continent.
The African Cup of Nations will kickoff on January 9 and end on February 6. He said, “It’s a huge frustration, but I don’t want to argue, it’s not my style.”
“I’m going to have a hard time doing without these great players and this very united staff, but the environment is not always favourable, we cannot control everything.
“It’s hard to understand because I got along very well with all these young players that I launched and that I tried to improve. There were great deadlines to live.”
The German has been criticised for his team’s recent poor outings against supposedly smaller teams, including the Central African Republic, which beat Nigeria 1-0 in Lagos and Cape Verde, a game that Nigeria barely managed to earn a draw also in Lagos.
Rohr has since been replaced by former Super Eagles’ captain, Austin Eguavoen. Nigeria is drawn in Group D of the African Cup of Nations alongside seven-time champions Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau.
