In this piece, I want to show us three things we can do as leaders to rescue our leadership from the pangs of ineffectiveness.
Listen to Podcast: How to Rescue Your Leadership from Ineffectiveness
1). Talk less and Do More! In the book of Acts 1:1, the Bible says: “The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach…” Jesus’ leadership was not just about talking alone and doing nothing. Jesus taught and also went to work Himself. There were certain responsibilities that Jesus didn’t leave to the care of His disciples, He simply executed them by Himself. For example, Jesus washed the feet of His disciples. That’s an example of ‘doing’. Jesus preached about the Kingdom of God Himself, that is an example of ‘doing’. Jesus fasted and prayed, He didn’t delegate it to His disciples to do for Him, that is also and example of doing something. When Jesus ate the last Passover with His disciples, He was the one who served them the bread and the wine, that is an example of doing something.
As leaders, even though we know we have the power and ability to delegate responsibilities and assignment, there are certain times and occasions where we ourselves, must rise up and begin to provide leadership, simply by doing. It has been proven that followers learn more when they see their do exactly what they try to communicate to them verbally. This is very, very important if we are going to rescue our leadership from the pangs of ineffectiveness.
2). Avoid Procrastination at all Cost! In the book of Proverbs 27:1, the Bible says: “Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring.” There are many things we ought to have done today as leaders, that we simply procrastinate about. But here, Solomon is showing us that all we have is today and therefore, whatever that must be done in that day must be done because nobody knows what the next day may look like. For this reason alone, we can see that procrastination is never and can never be a good practice in leadership. Many leaders are ineffective simply because they procrastinate too much. Jesus was never a leader that was given to procrastination and we all must learn from His leadership if we will end up becoming effective leaders.
Jesus said in John 9:4, it says: “I (we) must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” If we as leaders continue to procrastinate, not doing what we have been called to do in our leadership assignment, we simply open the doors to ineffectiveness. In Ecclesiastes 9:10, the Bible says: “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.” We must never be seen procrastinating our assignments in leadership, this is all that we live for and therefore, we must do it when the time and the opportunity presents itself.
3). Be a Diligent Leader! In Proverbs 12:24, the Bible says: “The hand of the diligent will rule, but the lazy man will be put to forced labor.” A leader that is given to diligence will definitely rule in his or her chosen field of endeavor. It may take time, but such a leader will definitely rule. The number law of effectiveness is diligence. The Webster dictionary defines diligence as: “steady, earnest, and energetic effort that is directed towards achieving a particular result.” A leader who is diligent can never be ineffective. And there is one truth I have personally discovered about diligence. I have discovered that diligence can actually be practiced.
A lot of people are not diligent simply because they haven’t practiced it long enough to become the culture of their lives or the culture of their organization. Your organization can so much be diligent to the extent that your clients can commit their entire life into your care. This is what diligence does.
So, as leaders, if we can do more in our leadership, if we can avoid procrastination at all cost, and if we can be diligent in our leadership, at the end of the day, we would have rescued our leadership from the trenches of ineffectiveness and we will see ourselves making the needed progress that we ought to make. I believe you have learnt a few things from this piece.
