Motorists plying the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) toll plaza in Lagos have lamented increase in toll fare by the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), saying the hike is coming at a time when the economy is challenged.
They lamented that the country is currently battling challenges of fuel subsidy removal, floating of naira and rising cost of living. FAAN had on July 1 increased fares paid by motorists plying the route. Based on the new fees, cars are to pay N300; SUVs and buses N500; trucks (six tyres) N1, 000, while trailers pay N2, 000.
But despite the increment, there are still some failed portions on the road that should be fixed by the managers to allow free flow of traffic. Speaking with The Guardian, a motorist who identified himself as Kunle, said the increment was ill-timed and caught many unawares.
He said FAAN should have given motorists more time before effecting the change. Shuttle drivers within the airport axis also lamented the increase, saying they have written to FAAN to look into the increase.
One of the shuttle drivers who spoke with The Guardian said FAAN increased its yearly registration from N80, 000 to N85, 000, but assured commuters that the increase would not affect their fare.
As at press time, the Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN, Yakubu Funtua, was yet to respond to inquiries on the issue.
