The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) is calling for the prompt implementation of the teachers’ professional salary structure in the country’s budget. The salary structure, which was supposed to be implemented since 2023, was approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari in commemoration of World Teachers Day on October 5, 2020.
The structure includes a special salary scale for teachers in basic and secondary schools, as well as provisions for rural posting allowance, science teachers allowance, and peculiar allowance. Additionally, Buhari increased the number of years of service and retirement age of teachers from 35 to 40 and 60 to 65 respectively.
However, the NUT’s National President, Comrade Audu Amba, expressed regret that these approvals have not been implemented, particularly the professional salary structure for teachers. He urged the present administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure the implementation of these policies for the development of the nation’s educational sector.
Amba also highlighted other promises made by former President Buhari, such as building low-cost housing for teachers in rural areas and sponsoring at least one refresher training per annum for teachers to benchmark best practices for improved teaching and learning.
The NUT organized its 6th Annual Solemn Assembly in Abuja, where the activities of the union were submitted into the hands of God through prayers led by pastors and imams of repute. The union finds it imperative to seek divine intervention for the development of the educational sector in Nigeria.
