The internet has been largely divided since Chelsea announced the signing of the American 20-year-old youngster, Christian Pulisic, from Borussia Dortmund for a hefty £58 million transfer fee.
Now, before we get into the article, let us agree that Chelsea and Pulisic will benefit immensely from this deal as he is such an impressive young talent in the world football at the moment.
Pulisic is not the finished product yet. It’s probably a gamble that Chelsea has taken for an extremely talented player. The last time Chelsea spent big money on a prodigal 20-year-old winger, he became a world-class player and went on to become the most important player at Stamford Bridge. Yes, comparisons to Eden Hazard aren’t justified but spending £32 million on a youngster paid its dividends and in the current market, a £58 million gamble is totally worth it.
Chelsea has added a quality youngster to their aging wingers’ list with Willian and Pedro into their 30s. Maurizio Sarri would be happy to sign a wide man with so much versatility and his best years still ahead of him. While Pulisic’s agility, dribbling, and movement with the ball are of extreme quality, his ability to play on either wing or through the middle as a number 10 makes him a versatile player.
Pulisic’s numbers aren’t very impressive since 2015 as he has scored only 15 Goals and assisted 24 in 115 appearances across all competitions. But then again, when you realize that he’s just 20 years old and already has over 100 games of professional football under his belt makes him an invaluable asset.
This may sound like the decision is straight out of a marketing board meeting. By paying £58 million for Pulisic, Chelsea has tapped into the US Market and this could bring a big boost to their fan base and revenue.
The United States of America is slowly growing into a big soccer market with big players from Europe moving to the MLS albeit in their final years as players and more European clubs have been playing in front of packed American crowds in Pre-Season. This implies that the US is slowing growing a liking for the sport and with their prodigal son signing for Chelsea it could open many new doors for Chelsea in the future.
In Pulisic, Chelsea has signed a player with all the makings of a potential star and from what all his coaches have gone on to say, a thorough professional. An experienced young player is a rare commodity in Football and Chelsea is lucky to have acquired a potential world-beater with bags of talent.
