The governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has ordered the immediate suspension of all kinds of transport levies.
The directive is contained in a statement by Otti’s spokesperson, Ferdinand Ekeoma, on Wednesday.
Ekeoma said the state government has directed the immediate suspension of all types of transport levy payable imposed on tricycles, buses, taxis, and other commercial vehicles plying Abia roads.
According to him, the directive is in line with Governori’s campaign promise to sanitise revenue collection methods in Abia and put an end to all forms of extortion, intimidation, and harassment of motorists.
He noted that the suspension takes immediate effect and will remain until the government reviews these levies and makes public arrangements for the smooth, organised, and transparent collection of such transportation levies.
Ekeoma added that security agents have been briefed and directed to apprehend and bring to justice anyone found violating this directive.
“In the light of the above decision, Governor Otti have asked all those involved, directly and indirectly, to please discontinue forthwith or face the wrath of the law, as security agents have been briefed and directed to apprehend and bring to justice anyone found violating this directive,” he said.
