Mudiaga Affe, Calabar
One unidentified official of the Cross River State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has been killed by a policeman in Calabar.
Our correspondent gathered on Thursday that the incident happened after the slain civil defence official stepped out of an NSCDC van to talk to some policemen, who had mounted a checkpoint close to the NSCDC’s state command headquarters’ gate.
An eyewitness, Stephen Joseph, said the policemen mounted the checkpoint at about 8pm on Wednesday when the incident occurred.
Joseph said, “One of the policemen drew his gun and shot at the NSCDC officials. One of them, a sergeant, died on the spot, while another NSCDC officer, was injured.”
The Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Dayo Adesuyi, reportedly told family members of the deceased on Thursday that an investigation into the incident had commenced.
The Public Relations Officer of NSCDC, Mr. Solomon Eremin, confirmed the incident.
He said, “Our men were stopped at a police checkpoint very close to our headquarters. As one of them came down to speak with the policemen, he was shot and he died instantly.”
The state police spokesman, John Eluu, said he was not aware of the incident.
