President Muhammadu Buhari Wednesday in Abuja swore in Justice Tanko Muhammad as the Chief Justice of Nigeria. Buhari swore in Muhammad in the State House following his confirmation last week by the Senate. Muhammad Tanko emerged, first in acting capacity when the former CJN, Walter Onnoghen was accused of false asset declaration by the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
The NJC had recommended Onnoghen for compulsory retirement after deliberating on a petition by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alleging “financial impropriety, infidelity to the constitution and other economic and financial crimes related laws”.
Tanko was appointed as acting CJN in January 2019 after Justice Walter Onnoghen was suspended based on false declaration of asset.
