The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has called for the vast improvement of security within every state of Nigeria in the nearest possible future.
Lawan made this call on Wednesday morning following the complaint lodged by Senator Abba Moro representing the Benue South senatorial district of Benue State.
Moro cited Order 42 to notify the Senate of the agony and anguish of the people of Benue South Senatorial District occasioned by the incessant attacks by suspected killer herdsmen.
Lawan while welcoming his fellow members to a new Legislative Day in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria thereafter called for the improvement of security in the country.
“Let me emphasize that the security of citizens of this country remains the primary purpose of government,” Lawan addressed.
“Our security agencies have been doing their best but they still need to do more to improve the security situation in the country.
“This Senate and indeed the National Assembly has approved every single request of funds for improving on the arming of our security agencies for the improvement of their welfare and we will continue to do so till the last day of our tenure.
“It is logical that we expect an improvement of security in the country because of the massive investment the federal government has done and even some states.
“It is imperative that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) access the situations of the communities affected and deliver something to improve on their means of livelihood.
“The Benue State Government also has some responsibility to work with federal government agencies so that our communities are taken back to their ancestral homes.”
The NEMA which was established in 1999 is an agency whose main function is to formulate policies relating to disaster management in all parts of Nigeria.
Benue South Senatorial District where Nigeria’s longest-serving senator, David Mark who was the president of the 6th and 7th Assemblies hails from covers Ado, Agatu, Apa, Obi, Ogbadibo, Ohimini, Oju, Okpokwu, Otukpo and Gboko.
