Two men, Marcus Olaitan and Ajibade Adeolu, have been brought before the Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing more than N2 million from an ATM belonging to First Bank.
Olaitan and Adeolu, both of whom are POS operators residing in Ketu, Lagos, are facing charges of conspiracy and theft.
According to the prosecutor, ASP Raji Akeem, the offenses occurred on September 4, 2023, at an ATM located on CMD Road, Magodo-Shangisha, Lagos. Akeem explained that the complainant, Mrs. Wuraola Odeniyi, had visited the ATM to withdraw cash, where she encountered an individual who claimed to be a security guard for the bank. Unbeknownst to her, this individual memorized her Personal Identification Number (PIN).
Later that day, the woman received a debit alert totaling N2.517 million. Upon visiting the bank to lodge her complaint, the CCTV footage revealed the individual she had met at the ATM reciting the numbers on her card.
The police were subsequently able to track down the POS operators who transferred the money. Although the defendants pleaded not guilty, they were each granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties of like sum. The case has been adjourned until March 18 for mention.
