The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has debunked the news making the rounds that it has renewed Super Eagles Manager, Jose Peseiro’s contract.
On Monday, there were reports that Peseiro’s contract has been extended till after next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire. The reports also said that the NFF gave the Portuguese a minimum of a semifinal finish in Cote d’Ivoire to get added time on the job.
NFF Media Director, Ademola Olajire, yesterday, told The Guardian that the Federation has not begun the process of reviewing the Super Eagles handler’s contract, which current deal expires this week.
“I am not aware that Peseiro’s contract has been renewed. Such information will be released by the NFF when it happens,” he said. The NFF recently took to the social media to gauge Nigerians’ disposition to the plan to retain the Portuguese as Super Eagles’ coach.
The NFF announced the appointment of Peseiro, who earns $70, 000 a month, as the new coach of the Eagles May 15, 2022, replacing Austin Eguavoen, who returned to his Technical Director role at the federation.
With the Super Eagles’ qualification for the 2024 AFCON after beating the Leone Stars 3-2 in Liberia, there are indications that the coach would be given another short contract.
However, some stakeholders are against handing the former Venezuela coach a new deal due to his not too impressive performance with the Eagles.
Speculations are rife that former Super Eagles players, Emmanuel Amuneke and Finidi George, who just led Enyimba of Aba to win the 2022/2023 abridged NPFL, would be appointed to take over from Peseiro.
