As FHIS sets 13,500 as annual HMO
The Federal Capital Territory Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ultimate Health Management Services to improve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and quality access to healthcare services in Nigeria.
It would be recalled that the federal government on May 19, 2022, passed the law to make health insurance enrolment mandatory for all Nigerians and all legal residents.
Speaking during the signing of the MoU between FHIS and Ultimate Health Management Services in Abuja, the Managing Director, Ultimate Health Management Services, Mr. Lekan Ewenla, noted that the Federal Capital Territory staffers have been enrolled into the insurance program.
He stated that the aim of the MoU was to make healthcare service affordable, accessible and equitable so that people of low life can also have access into the hospital treatment.
He said: “What we are here to discuss today is to focus on the organized private sectors that are yet to be enrolled into the health insurance program, including those that are operating in the informal sector which are the majority with over 80 per cent of entire population.
“So, they are Nigerians and that is the reason government has introduced the basic health care plan to make it affordable for all, because if you pay 13,500 and you go to take malaria treatment, and that is for 12 calendar months; if you are going to pay out of your pocket, you are going to pay more than that.”
He further stated that it was the responsibility of the agency at the national level to set and enforce accreditation requirement standards for the health maintenance organizations and healthcare providers for good implementation of insurance program.
In his remarks, the Director, FHIS, Dr. Ahmed Danfulani, said that the enrolment of citizens into the insurance program gives an individual access to affordable healthcare services.
He explained that the premium for the FHIS benefit package is NI3,500.00 per person, annually while the premium for the national basic benefit package which is known as groups, individuals and families social health insurance package is N15,000.00 per person annually.
