Delivering a message is as important as the person delivering it. Yesterday’s democracy speech delivered by the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo would not have inspired hope the way it does, assuming it was read by President Muhammadu Buhari. To some extent, i got renewed by it, i dont know about you. President Buhari led administration came on board exactly two years ago. Whether people like it or not, and irrespective of the great statistics of achievements coming from some APC stalwarts as the successes of this administration in the last two years, the truth is that Nigerians are not happy with the way and direction this government is headed.
The various policies of this administration has ministered hardship and poverty to many Nigerians than the previous administration. Things are very expensive, prices of some basic food items and other commodities have gone up. There is recession, untold hardship being faced by many Nigerians on daily basis cannot be quantified. This is an administration that promised change. But two years on, nothing really has changed, except for those who lives within the bubbles and see from the lenses of Aso Villa. Although, people would argue that two years isn’t enough to fix the rot in Nigeria. That is true! But two years is enough to know if a government has genuine focus and direction to solving real time problems.
No doubt, the Ag. President’s speech inspired some hope in me, and i believe it did same for many Nigerians who listened and have been actively following this administration’s activities in the last two years. But what this government mustn’t fail to realise is that time is running out. There seems to be so much to be done in such a little time. Although the message inspired hope, this hope must be evidenced in the lives of ordinary nigerians finding it hard to survive under this unfriendly economic climate.
President Buhari, you promised change; and that was the main reason Nigerians gave all it took two years ago to get you into Aso Rock. Nigerians had a choice whether to continue in Babylon or to break free and move into the promised land. Babylon represented how Nigeria had faired from 1999 when democracy was restored till 2015, when PDP was sent parking. It was a period characterised by corruption, impunity, and no respect for the rule of law. Although, many will still claim that they faired well in that old system of doing things, but we all know it was a system that should be discontinued for all Nigerians to truly enjoy the dividends of democracy.
But today, two years into your administration, the dividends of democracy hasn’t been felt yet. Our hospitals are still the way they were two years ago. Even you Mr. President had to travel oversea to get the best of healthcare. Education has not so much improved. There are so little that has been done in the areas of infrastructural development. We dont have constant electricity yet, our roads are still terribly unmotorable. These are not good report for a govenrment that promised change.
Everything has remained on the level of promise. The administration’s programs looks very beautiful on paper, but the implementation has not made any meaningful effect. We know a lot of the change being promised would not happen over night, but there should be some sense of relief that the nation is headed in the right direction. But nigerians have learnt a couple of lessons, and 2019 elections would determine the kind of future the people of Nigeria wants – whether to continue with your leadership or change it.
