Let us begin from the basic understanding of what transformational leadership entails. Transformational leadership inspires people to be all that they can be. The goal of every transformational leadership is to take a people from where they are presently, to where they can or ought to be, through inspiration and motivation. We should never forget that the crux of every leadership responsibility is to take a people, through the needed inspiration and motivation from the leader, to where such people ought to be.
Jesus was a great example of a transformational leader. His assignment was to lead a people towards the way of God. Now, there was no way he would have been able to achieve this if Jesus was not inspirational and motivational enough. If you read the book of Matthew 5, you would understand what I am talking about. This is a man whose only vision is to see people liberated and enjoy freedom, a people who had before that time been under the oppression of the devil. Let us read the Beatitudes in our spare time to corroborate this.
Haven laid the background for what we would be sharing with ourselves, what then are the keys to effective transformational Leadership that we are talking about? They are: Consistency and Credibility.
Let us examine the life and times of Jesus, one of the greatest transformational leaders that have graced the surface of the earth. What Jesus successfully did what to give us the best leadership model that can make this leadership journey easy for everyone of us. Perhaps you are a leader, and you are still struggling with your leadership assignment, then I will recommend that you familiarize yourself with Jesus’ leadership model and learn a couple of things.
In the book of Acts 1:1, Luke documented something important about the life of Jesus Christ. It says: “The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach..” Now, if you ask me what I see in that Bible passage, I would simply reply you by saying consistency and credibility in action. As a leader, you cannot joke with these two words if you want to leave a mark in the sands of time.

Consistency talks about a state of being constant, not deviating, regularity and so on. In other words, as a leader, if you say something is ‘color white’ today, you don’t change your mind tomorrow and say that thing is no longer color white, but ‘color blue’. This would amount to being referred to as inconsistent. The above bible passage tells us how Jesus lived His life as a leader. He was consistent in what He does, and He was able to also communicate or teach, as well, what He was doing.
Consistency here also means being steadfast, immovable and always abounding in everything that is good (1 Corinthians 15:58). Jesus demonstrated these three characteristics as well. No wonder the Scripture says in Hebrews 13:8 that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. That tells you that consistency is key. Don’t do something today, and then do another thing that is contrary to what you have done; another day. This will make it difficult to appropriately place you by the people that is following you. Consistency is very key if you would be a transformational leader.
The second key word in that Scripture is Credibility. This connotes the quality of being believed or accepted as true, real, or honest. A leader who is deemed credible by people don’t struggle to get followership. Many people are finding it difficult to vote again certain Nigerian politicians in this next general elections because they have found out that they are not credible leaders while in office. They told the people that they are fighting corruption, but the same leaders are seeing around romancing with corrupt politicians. This is not a good indication that such a leader is credible.
For you to be a transformational leader, you must be credible at all cost. How do you then become a credible leader? Ephesians 4:1 gives us the answer. Apostle Paul wrote “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called..” That means, stick with your leadership purpose, and don’t deviate from it. Let people always find you walking worthy, every day and every time they have the reason to come in contact with you.
Let me conclude this way. Two things you need to take your people from where they are right now, to where they ought to be. They are: inspiration and motivation. On the other hand, to be a transformational leader; you also need two things. They are: consistency and credibility. Never joke with these traits as a leader. They would go a long way to determine whether your leadership destiny will be perpetuated, or whether they would be cut short.
