In 1844, the Revd Samuel Ajayi Crowther returned home to Yorubaland (now part of modern-day Nigeria). Twenty years earlier, he had been kidnapped and sold to European slave traders who were bound for the Americas. He was freed by an abolitionist naval patrol, and received by the Church Missionary Society. There, he found his calling. Crowther made his voyage home to establish the first Anglican mission in Yorubaland. He came with the first Bibles translated into Yoruba and Hausa languages. He opened dialogue and discussion with those of other faiths. And his mission was a success: Crowther later became the…

In a medical first, a mother who received a uterus transplant from a dead donor gave birth to a healthy baby, researchers reported Wednesday. The breakthrough operation, performed in September 2016 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, shows that such transplants are feasible and could help thousands of women unable to have children due to uterine problems, according to a study published in The Lancet. The baby girl was born in December 2017, the medical journal added. Until recently, the only options available to women with so-called uterine infertility were adoption or the services of a surrogate mother. The first successful childbirth…
The holidays may be the most wonderful time of the year for some, but that’s not necessarily true when it comes to relationships. The stress brought on by travel, finances, extra-busy schedules and difficult relatives may take a toll on you and your partner, individually and as a couple. We asked marriage therapists to share common relationship problems that always seem to crop up this time of year and how to handle them. Here’s what they told us: 1. Not being honest about holiday spending “Between buying presents, plane tickets, parties, decorations, extra food and more, holiday spending can lead to disagreements about how much and where money should be…
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is to accept an FA charge relating to his celebration of Liverpool’s winning goal in the Merseyside derby against Everton. Klopp sprinted onto the pitch to celebrate with goalkeeper Alisson after Divock Origi netted in the 96th minute to earn the Reds a 1-0 win at Anfield on Sunday. The German was charged with misconduct by the Football Association (FA) for his enthusiastic reaction and was given until 18:00 GMT on Thursday to respond to the charge. The FA is yet to receive an official response but Klopp has confirmed he has no objection to paying any fine…
Manchester United find themselves in an abyss of their own making at the moment. Their defensive woes have been well documented and contrary to popular belief, their attackers haven’t scored too many goals either. Manager Jose Mourinho’s head is on the chopping block but the Portuguese has done all that can be possibly done. It is the players who need to stand accountable for their below-par performances. The 2-2 draw to Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday was a classic example of what United could have achieved if they had gelled well together as a team or learnt to…

More than 150 women and girls have sought treatment in the past 12 days for rape and other acts of sexual violence near Bentiu, the second largest city in South Sudan, UN officials say. A joint statement from the UN humanitarian chief and the heads of the UN children’s agency UNICEF and the UN population agency condemned the “abhorrent attacks.” They said that “the assailants have been described as armed men, many in uniform.” A UN statement said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the attacks. “These horrific acts are a distressing reminder of how, despite recent recommitments by South Sudan’s…
What’s the rumour? Arsenal star Mesut Ozil is reportedly a transfer target for Serie A outfit Inter Milan, who are looking to bring the German midfielder to Italy next year. In case you didn’t know… The German playmaker moved away from Real Madrid to join Premier League outfit Arsenal in a £42.4m transfer in 2013. The 30-year-old has since had a polarising stint at the North London club, having often been accused of being lackadaisical in big games. In recent weeks, Ozil has been left out of Unai Emery’s squad because of the “physicality and intensity” required in the games. Speaking…
The English Premier League is well and truly underway and has reached the Christmas period with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City tearing it apart with their tenacity and ferociousness. Liverpool is closing in on them but other contenders are still far away. Over the years the Premier League has produced players who have turned into superstars, giants who have turned into legends and magicians have who turned into maestros. However, there have always been some players who did not realise their true potential at their respective clubs and faded out. Those players, in turn, achieved greatness at other clubs where they…
Chelsea got back to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-0 win over rivals Fulham at Stamford Bridge after their disappointing defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last Saturday. However, Maurizio Sarri’s men were made to sweat unlike the score-line would suggest as they just about did enough to get the job done in the end. The Blues got off to a flying start when they opened the scoring as early as the 4th minute through Pedro, who started ahead of Willian on the day. Chelsea were accused of starting games poorly in recent weeks, but they responded handsomely by scoring their fastest goal of the season and…
