A summer surprise in the form of a midfielder looks set to be sprung on the Camp Nou with Arturo Vidal’s arrival looking imminent at Barcelona, with the Chilean previously seeming just a matter of steps away from joining Inter.
The signing of Vidal, hasty as it may seem, is rather taking advantage of an opportunity to incorporate a necessary type of player into Ernesto Valverde‘s system. Here are five reasons they have gone for the Bayern Munich man.
1. Paulinho’s profile
The most recent evidence that a player like Vidal can work in this Barcelona is Paulinho who so successfully settled under Valverde last season before being sold against the wishes of the coach this summer. In his absence, the coach wants the void filled and Vidal offers similar characteristics to the Brazilian.
2. A key cog in the spine
Vidal is an all-round, all-action player who covers distance like few others. These features would help to bring out the best in Ivan Rakitic and Sergio Busquetsand allow them to break free from time to time.
3. Aerial play
Another facet in Vidal’s game is his ability in the air. Whether it’s in defence or attack he is deceptively strong with his head and this would bring a lot to Valverde’s system.
4. Leadership and character
He did it with Chile, Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus and with Bayern Munich. If there is one thing that defines the midfielder it is his character and ability to lead and omit a winning mentality. He orders, corrects and makes his space his own.
5. Experience and instant impact
Just as some signings are afforded time to settle and acclimatise, Vidal will be expected to hit the ground running and this is something that he has shown with every move he has made. His track record of performing at Europe’s biggest clubs show that he is up to the task, and he should take the move in his stride.
