The Federal government has announced plans to begin the second phase of the vaccination against the Human papillomavirus (HPV) by May 2024. Dr. Muyi Aina, the executive director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), made this announcement during a press briefing in Abuja. The first phase of the vaccination was successfully rolled out in October 2023, targeting 7.7 million girls aged 9 to 14 in 15 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
For the second phase of the vaccination, 21 states have been selected. These states include Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Gombe, Imo, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ondo, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Yobe, and Zamfara. This initiative is seen as a crucial step towards expanding the availability of vaccines to all Nigerians.
Dr. Muyi Aina further emphasized the federal government’s commitment to providing quality and affordable healthcare services in the country. He outlined a strategy that focuses on making quality primary healthcare services accessible to every Nigerian, regardless of their location. Over the next four years, efforts will be made to fully equip health facilities, ensure an adequate healthcare workforce, and provide technical assistance to effectively utilize available resources.
