IHS Nigeria, a subsidiary of IHS Holding Limited, has completed the rollout of over 10,000 kilometres of fibre optic cables across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The company’s subsidiary, Global Independent Connect Limited (GICL), has deployed Fiber-to-the-Tower (FTTT) technology to increase transmission capacity and improve the performance of fibre access networks. This infrastructure will also support the introduction of next-generation technologies, including 5G services.
By connecting towers, IHS Nigeria is bringing fibre infrastructure to core metropolitan areas, enabling the delivery of digital services to homes, corporations, and public institutions. This supports the Federal Government’s National Broadband Plan, which aims to achieve 70% broadband penetration in Nigeria by 2025.
In addition to the fibre optic network, IHS Nigeria has also implemented mobile network coverage in over 580 previously unconnected rural communities through its rural telephony program. This initiative helps meet the rollout targets of mobile network operators (MNOs) and supports the government’s digital inclusion agenda.
Kazeem Oladepo, Vice President of GICL, emphasized the importance of an open access, shared infrastructure approach to fibre optic deployment. This allows multiple operators to utilize the infrastructure, leading to robust and scalable networks. The collaboration with stakeholders, including customers and state and federal agencies, has enabled a significant volume of fibre optic cable network delivery in under three years.
IHS Towers is one of the largest independent owners, operators, and developers of shared communications infrastructure in the world. The company has nearly 40,000 towers across 11 markets, including Nigeria, Brazil, Egypt, and South Africa. It is focused on emerging markets and supports the digital economy objectives of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
