Muslim leaders in Ondo State, Nigeria, have criticized Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for allegedly marginalizing Muslims in the state.
The League of Imams and Alfas accused the governor of making lopsided appointments that exclude Muslims from key positions. They compared Aiyedatiwa’s actions to those of his predecessor, former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who also overlooked Muslims in top positions.
The League, led by Sheikh Ahmad Aladesawe, called for a more balanced representation of Muslims in important appointments across various sectors. Aladesawe pointed out that Ondo State is not a Christian state and urged the governor to prioritize peace and stability.
The League of Imams and Alfas also expressed concern about the treatment of Muslim students in schools and advised against returning schools to faith-based organizations. They conveyed their disappointment to Governor Aiyedatiwa during a visit, stating that the Muslim community in Ondo State is unhappy with the appointments made by him so far.
Aiyedatiwa defended the appointments, stating that they were made for political reasons rather than religious ones. He explained that the deputy governor was chosen to honor the late Akeredolu and the SSG appointment was based on transitional considerations for completing the ongoing administration’s tenure.
