Dr. Ifedayo Morayo Adetifa has officially handed over the leadership of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) to Dr. Olajide Idris after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s announcement. Dr. Adetifa’s tenure saw significant advancements in fulfilling the mandate of preventing, detecting, and responding to public health events, especially during challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Olajide Idris, with over 30 years of experience in medical practice, Healthcare Systems Management, Consulting, Pharmaceuticals, and Research, is set to lead as the new Director General.
During his time as Permanent Secretary and Commissioner of Health in Lagos State, Dr. Idris oversaw significant health reforms, including medical emergency services, human resource development, infrastructural development, primary care system revitalization, healthcare financing, health promotion, and disease prevention. His leadership during the Ebola virus outbreak response showcased his ability to advance Nigeria’s health security agenda.
Dr. Adetifa’s contributions were praised for enhancing the nation’s health security and advancing the health sector reform four-point agenda. The NCDC team expressed gratitude for his service and welcomed Dr. Idris, recognising his capabilities and experience to lead the organization. This transition marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s public health sector with a focus on continuity and advancement in health security efforts.
