According to a military source, four members of the Myanmar security services, including a brigadier-general, were shot dead by sniper fire on Monday as their helicopter was preparing to land. The incident occurred near the town of Thingannyinaung, located on the Thai border.
The brigadier-general, Aye Min Naung, his security officer, and two pilots were shot by a sniper, resulting in the death of the brigadier-general. Two other servicemen on the helicopter managed to survive, although no further details were provided. The source did not disclose the number of snipers involved or assign blame for the shooting.
Images circulated by local media showed the aftermath of the incident, featuring a twin-engined Eurocopter 365 lying on its side in a field. This incident marks the latest high-ranking officer to be killed on the frontlines since the military coup in 2021. In November, another brigadier-general was killed by a bomb dropped from a drone near the China border.
The conflict between the junta and opponents of the coup has led to a surge in violence across Myanmar. Multiple armed ethnic groups have been engaging in battles with the military forces, resulting in a high number of casualties. The situation remains volatile, with clashes and incidents occurring in various parts of the country.
